Job description

About JerseySTEM
All JerseySTEM roles are pro-bono (unpaid) positions.
JerseySTEM is a mission-driven professional network of pro-bono contributors dedicated to improving access to STEM education and career pathways for underserved middle school girls in New Jersey.
Members contribute their professional skills and leverage their networks in service of the organization's gender-equity agenda.
Membership is a minimum six-month commitment of approximately six flexible hours per week and includes a $100 refundable deposit, returned after six months of active membership. K-12 educators, retirees, veterans, interns, and students are exempt from the deposit.
Overview
Moving beyond standard spreadsheet reporting, the Data Analytics Engineer focuses on data preparation and front-end business intelligence. Working within a collaborative team, this role is responsible for writing clean transformation queries to prep raw operational data and implementing high-impact operational dashboards that provide the organization with reliable information.
Responsibilities
  • Data Processing & Prep: Clean, aggregate, and structure raw operational data related to schools, colleges, and corporate partners. Consume data from tables managed by the Data Integration team and use SQL or data prep tools to turn them into optimized views for reporting.
  • Operational Dashboard Implementation: Design, develop, and maintain high-performing dashboards and visual reports using our standard toolset (Looker for now) to identify key trends and patterns.
  • Technical Query Execution: Write clean, optimized SQL queries and manage database view configurations to ensure frontend reporting sheets refresh smoothly, rapidly, and accurately.
  • Business Translation & Collaboration: Partner with team members to gather operational requirements, translate complex tracking metrics into intuitive layouts, and help drive data-backed organizational decisions.
  • Data Quality Assurance & Documentation: Implement rigorous validation checks to ensure dashboard numbers consistently align with actual system records. Contribute to internal documentation detailing data processing procedures to maintain team-wide consistency.

Qualifications
  • Mission Alignment: A genuine passion for educational equity, youth development, and contributing to closing the gender gap in STEM fields.
  • FIVE years of industry experience in SaaS or non-profit technical environments.
  • Technical Stack Expertise: Solid proficiency in relational databases and visual analytics platforms (specifically MySQL and Looker Studio).
  • Advanced Analytics & SQL: Strong mastery of writing, optimization, and troubleshooting of complex SQL queries to manipulate, aggregate, and join disparate data tables. Familiarity with Python or R for data analysis is advantageous.
  • Collaboration & Design: A strong analytical mindset with the ability to work effectively in a team environment, turning raw system numbers into clear, readable, and intuitive visual layouts for team leadership.
  • Tools & Operations: Comfortable navigating and utilizing Jira for task tracking and Google Workspace for documentation and collaboration. Prior experience with structured data research or data documentation is a plus.
  • Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field (Data Analytics, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related discipline) or equivalent practical professional experience.
