High School Exceptional Children's Coach (912)

Department of Exceptional Children

Position Summary

The High School EC Coach provides instructional, programmatic, and compliance support to Exceptional Children's teachers serving students in grades 912. The Coach works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, EC Specialists, Coordinators, and district staff to strengthen instruction, IEP development and implementation, compliance, and student outcomes.

The Coach provides support across the continuum of high school EC programming, including General Curriculum (GC), Occupational Course of Study (OCS), and Extended Content Standards (ECS).

Responsible To: Secondary EC Specialist
Payment Rate: Certified Teacher Salary Schedule
Term of Employment: 10 Months

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience with students with disabilities preferred.
  • Current North Carolina teaching license in special education.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional practices, IEP development and implementation, progress monitoring, transition planning, and EC compliance.
  • Strong communication, organization, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Essential Responsibilities

Instructional & Program Support

  • Provide classroom-based coaching and instructional support in GC, OCS, and ECS classrooms.
  • Model and support evidence-based instructional practices and specially designed instruction.
  • Assist teachers with aligning instruction, accommodations, modifications, and supports to students' IEPs and identified needs.
  • Support OCS teachers, job coaches, and transition staff with instructional programming, transition planning, employability skills, and postsecondary preparation.
  • Support teachers in creating structured, engaging learning environments that promote student success and independence.
  • Provide resources, modeling, coaching, and follow-up support based on individual teacher and program needs.

IEP & Progress Monitoring Support

  • Provide IEP support before, during, and after IEP meetings, including preparation, documentation, implementation, and follow-up.
  • Assist teachers with developing high-quality present levels, measurable goals, specially designed instruction, accommodations, services, transition components, and progress-monitoring procedures.
  • Assist teachers in developing data-tracking and progress-monitoring tools aligned with IEP goals and student needs.
  • Support teachers in collecting, analyzing, and using data to guide instruction, IEP decisions, and communication with families.
  • Promote consistent and accurate implementation and documentation of student IEPs.

Compliance & Professional Support

  • Assist the Secondary EC Specialist with monitoring and supporting EC compliance, including timelines, documentation, ECATS processes, confidential records, progress reporting, and other EC requirements.
  • Assist in identifying trends and areas of need and provide proactive coaching and follow-up support.
  • Maintain knowledge of the Manifestation Determination Review process, disciplinary requirements, and high school EC programming options.
  • Collaborate with EC Specialists, Coordinators, Related Services, transition staff, administrators, teachers, and other district personnel.
  • Assist with planning and facilitating PLCs, professional development, and other learning opportunities for EC staff.
  • Build teacher capacity through coaching, modeling, feedback, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Participate in required meetings, trainings, and district EC initiatives.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Be visible, accessible, and responsive to EC teachers and students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the EC Specialist, EC Coordinators, or Director of Exceptional Children.
