Why this role matters:
The Assistant Nurse/EMT is responsible for working within the health room and providing health care to all campers and staff within the guidelines of the Bender JCC of Greater Washington.
Core Responsibilities include:
  • Provide health care to meet individual needs of camp staff and campers. Collaborate with other medical staff to meet medical needs.
  • Follow healthcare policies and procedures as described in the standing orders and medical program.
  • Comply with the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and American Camp Association standards
  • Co-conduct a staff orientation session on medical, health and safety services.
  • Support the Head Nurse in preparing and utilizing daily medical log for treatment and medications.
  • Support the Head Nurse in overseeing first aid procedures and supplies.
  • Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff. Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed.
  • Assist the Head Nurse in inventorying and ordering all necessary medical supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure staff and camper health examinations are current and on file.
  • Prepare and record insurance and incident report forms as required by the state and Bender JCC.
  • Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases.
  • Observe and assess sanitation and safety conditions of the camp. Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Head Nurse.
  • Take part in the daily clean-up of the health room.
  • Attend all orientation sessions and staff meetings.

Qualifications include:
  • RN, LPN, CNA license or certificate and/or Maryland EMT license and/or national registry EMS certification
  • CPR and First Aid certified with experience in First Aid and Emergency Management and training in using AED.
  • Community health knowledge.
  • Experience working with illnesses and injuries in both children and adults.
  • Knowledge and understanding of common childhood illnesses and allergies and how they must be treated and accommodated in camp.
  • Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with parents, children, and peers.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, in writing, and electronically with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concerns.
  • Prior experience and comfort with working with school aged children with a wide range of abilities.
  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards within the camp program.
  • Ability to move equipment and supplies as required.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Knowledge of typical development in school-aged children.

Priority will be given to candidates who are available the entire camp season starting on June 15 going through mid-August
Additional Information
The salary range for this position is $6,000-$7000 (total pay for the regular camp season). Salary is determined based on experience including previous experience at Lessans Camp JCC.
