Job description

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sets up and operates lathe to perform machining operations.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT: Lathes and drills with common accessories, overhead crane and hand trucks, various power grinders, precision measuring equipment, miscellaneous hand tools.
MATERIALS: Carbon and alloy steels, non-ferrous metals and various other materials in such forms as bar stock, castings, forgings, tubing, weldments, stampings, etc.
SOURCE OF SUPERVISION: Foreman or Supervisor
DIRECTION EXERCISED: None
WORKING PROCEDURE:
  • Receives work assignment, print/sketch, and general instructions from Supervisor. Examines print and work order to determine operation procedure and required finish tolerance specifications.
  • Selects and installs appropriate chuck jaws; positions, aligns and secures workpiece; may use tailstock, live center or steadyrest to support part if required.
  • Sets speed, feed, tool and tool holder according to established procedures and methods for operation to be performed. Installs tooling and operates speed, feed and other control levers in proper sequence to complete operation; may change or reset tool or reposition part several times to complete machining cycle.
  • Performs limited range of common metal-cutting operations such as facing, boring, drilling, turning, chamfering, etc.
  • Grinds or prescribes grinding tools for special applications as needed.
  • Works under general supervision with guidance and direction available on unusual set up and operating problems.
  • Burr and clean parts as required. Inspects and gages own work in progress, stamps and identifies parts, records production date, etc., as required. Checks and maintains oil levels, cutting oils, and coolants on a daily basis to provide continuous operation.
  • May simultaneously operate single purpose automatic spline mill in conjunction with lathe, as required, to mill external keyways in parts such as feed tubes. Manually loads, unloads, and starts machine to complete automatic cycle.
  • Responsible for performance of duties and for good housekeeping in immediate work area. May perform duties of a similar nature within the limits of the occupation.
  • Cooperates with and receives assistance from other shop personnel in the performance of work functions.
