What is a Javascript developer contract?

A JavaScript Developer Contract job is a temporary or project-based role where a developer is hired to build or maintain JavaScript applications. Contract developers typically work for a fixed period, often for a company or as freelancers, on web development, front-end, or full-stack projects. These roles offer flexibility and can be remote or on-site, depending on the employer's needs. Contractors are usually paid hourly or per project rather than receiving a full-time salary and benefits.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Javascript developer contract?

A Javascript Developer working on contract typically spends their days writing and testing code, implementing new features, fixing bugs, and collaborating with designers and back-end developers to ensure seamless integration of web applications. They may also be responsible for attending virtual stand-up meetings, updating project stakeholders, and managing tasks through project management tools like Jira or Trello. Since contract roles are often project-based, the ability to quickly understand requirements and start contributing is crucial. Flexibility and clear communication help contractors align with the client’s expectations and deliver results within tight deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Javascript developer contract position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Javascript Developer Contractor, you need strong proficiency in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, along with a solid understanding of frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js, and a track record of delivering software projects. Experience with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and using build tools or package managers is often required, while relevant certifications in web development are a plus. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication with clients and team members help you excel in a contract setting. These skills ensure you can deliver quality code on time while collaborating efficiently in diverse or rapidly changing project environments.

Job description

MICROSOFT WORD ADD-IN DEVELOPER
Build a flexible Word-based reporting experience for a market-leading facility intelligence platform
Contract | Project-Based | Works Closely with Product and Engineering
About AkitaBox
AkitaBox helps organizations understand what they own, where it is located, what condition it is in, and where to invest next. Our cloud-based facility intelligence platform brings facility condition assessments, mobile data capture, asset and maintenance management, inspections, cost estimation, and capital planning into one connected system.
At the center of the AkitaBox story is what we believe is the leading purpose-built facility condition assessment solution in the market. AkitaBox pairs FCA with innovative, location-aware Capture capabilities, including AI-enabled workflows that help accelerate field data collection and convert observations into structured, actionable facility intelligence. Rather than ending in a static report, that information can remain current as work is completed, assets change, and capital priorities evolve.
*At this time, we are not accepting applications through third-party recruiting agencies.*
The Opportunity
AkitaBox is seeking an experienced Microsoft Word Add-In Developer for a focused contract engagement. The contractor will help design and build a modern Word add-in that connects to AkitaBox's published APIs and enables customers to pull selected facility data directly into reusable Word templates.
The solution will also retrieve data visualizations from visualization platforms through their published APIs, allowing users to arrange data fields and charts in the order they choose and refresh that content when needed. The objective is a reliable, intuitive template-building experience that turns live SaaS data into polished, repeatable customer documents.
This is both a consulting and hands-on development assignment. The successful contractor will partner with Product and Engineering on architecture, workflow, and user-experience decisions; integrate into AkitaBox's existing software development lifecycle; participate in daily standups and technical discussions; deliver production-ready code; and transfer the knowledge needed for the internal team to maintain and evolve the solution.
What You Will Do
  • Consult with Product and Engineering to translate user workflows into a practical add-in architecture and a clean, intuitive template-building experience.
  • Build a modern Microsoft Word task-pane add-in using Office.js, the Word JavaScript API, TypeScript, React, and Microsoft-aligned Fluent UI patterns.
  • Enable users to configure templates, arrange dynamic fields and visualizations, and refresh that content on demand using Word Content Controls and, where appropriate, Custom XML Parts.
  • Integrate with AkitaBox REST APIs and visualization platform APIs or SDKs to retrieve SaaS data and insert or refresh chart and visualization images.
  • Implement secure, seamless authentication between Microsoft 365 and AkitaBox using OAuth 2.0 and Microsoft Authentication Library patterns.
  • Design for Word on the web and supported Windows and Mac desktop clients, including requirement-set checks and graceful handling of platform differences.
  • Work within AkitaBox's development lifecycle, including standups, estimation, code review, testing, release planning, troubleshooting, and upgrade support.
  • Prepare the add-in for publication and distribution through the agreed Microsoft channel, including a practical approach to future upgrades.
  • Document the solution and transfer knowledge so AkitaBox can maintain and extend it, using AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully while reviewing generated code for production readiness.

The Ideal Contractor
AkitaBox is looking for a specialist who combines deep Microsoft Word add-in experience with strong modern web development skills and practical product judgment. This person should be able to explain technical tradeoffs clearly, collaborate effectively with internal teams, and carry a feature from design through publication, adoption, and maintainable handoff.
Required Experience and Capabilities
  • Direct experience building, publishing, and upgrading public Microsoft Word add-ins that have been installed and used by hundreds of users.
  • Strong command of Office.js and the Word JavaScript API, including programmatic insertion, formatting, tracking, and refresh of dynamic content through Content Controls, Custom XML Parts, and reusable templates.
  • Production-level TypeScript and React experience, including the ability to build and maintain a modern Office task-pane application.
  • Experience consuming RESTful APIs and integrating SaaS data into customer-facing applications or documents.
  • Practical knowledge of OAuth 2.0 and Microsoft authentication patterns, ideally including MSAL and single sign-on scenarios.
  • Experience publishing and distributing Office add-ins through Microsoft marketplace or enterprise distribution processes, including subsequent updates.
  • A demonstrated approach to cross-platform compatibility across Word on the web and supported Windows and Mac desktop environments.
  • Strong testing, debugging, security, documentation, and maintainability practices, plus clear communication within an established product and engineering operating rhythm.

Relevant and Preferred Background
  • Direct experience with a business-intelligence or visualization platform API.
  • Experience retrieving image blobs, SVGs, or other chart outputs from third-party services and reliably inserting or refreshing them in Word.
  • Experience with Fluent UI and Microsoft Office design conventions.
  • Experience designing template-engine logic, including advanced Content Control use cases and relationships among reusable Word templates.
  • Effective use of AI development tools to write, test, review, and improve production code, with the judgment to identify and correct weak or unreliable output.

Why Join AkitaBox?
  • Own a high-impact product extension. Help create a new way for customers to turn live facility intelligence into polished, repeatable Word deliverables.
  • Shape the solution from the beginning. Influence architecture, template logic, workflow, and user experience.
  • Bring together Microsoft Word, AkitaBox SaaS data, and third-party business-intelligence visualizations in one practical workflow.
  • Partner directly with Product and Engineering. Work closely with the teams that understand the customer, platform, and long-term product direction.
  • Join a culture that lives its values. AkitaBox combines high standards and ambitious goals with a collaborative, supportive environment where people genuinely enjoy working together and make room for fun along the way.

Contract Engagement
This is a project-based contract role. Engagement length, expected weekly capacity, work location, start timing, and commercial terms will be confirmed as the project plan is finalized.
Our Core Values
  • We Are One Team
  • Big Ideas, Creative Execution
  • We Prioritize Fun
  • We Continuously Learn
  • Diverse, Equitable and Inclusive
