What is a Java Solutions Architect?

A Java Solutions Architect is a senior technical role responsible for designing and overseeing the development of scalable, high-performance Java-based applications. They collaborate with stakeholders to define technical requirements, create architectural blueprints, and ensure alignment with business goals. Additionally, they guide development teams, set coding standards, and evaluate emerging technologies to enhance system efficiency and reliability. Their role bridges the gap between business needs and technical implementation, ensuring robust and maintainable software solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by a Java Solutions Architect, and how is support typically provided within teams?

Java Solutions Architects often encounter challenges such as managing evolving project requirements, ensuring systems' scalability and security, and integrating new technologies with legacy applications. To address these issues, they typically work closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, business analysts, and DevOps engineers, and participate in regular design reviews and agile ceremonies. Many companies provide ongoing learning opportunities, mentorship, and access to architectural forums or peer networks. This collaborative environment helps architects stay current with best practices and ensures that innovative yet practical solutions are developed for complex business needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java Solutions Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Java Solutions Architect, you need deep expertise in Java programming, software architecture, and system integration, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Spring Framework, RESTful APIs, cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), and relevant certifications (e.g., Oracle Certified Java Architect) is highly beneficial. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive successful project outcomes and effective cross-functional collaboration. These competencies are essential to design robust, scalable solutions and to lead technical teams in delivering complex enterprise applications.

Job description

At Fresche Solutions, we offer a great work-life balance with flexible hours. You can work remotely from anywhere in North America or from one of our offices-the decision is yours.
Why Join Fresche? We believe in leading our industry through innovation, delivering exceptional outcomes, and helping our customers achieve lasting success. We work hard to ensure that our values are reflected in everything we do-from setting priorities and developing ideas to delivering solutions and supporting our clients.
About the Role
As a Java Performance Architect, you will play a pivotal role in diagnosing, designing, and optimizing complex enterprise Java environments.
This position has a particular focus on Java application and system performance optimization. We are looking for someone with deep expertise in JVM behaviour and enterprise application performance who can identify bottlenecks across the application, middleware, database, operating-system, and infrastructure layers.
You will investigate complex production performance issues, identify root causes, and architect practical solutions that improve application responsiveness, transaction throughput, scalability, resource utilization, reliability, and overall system efficiency.
You will also work directly with clients and internal teams to lead technical discovery, communicate findings, recommend architectural improvements, and support implementation through completion.
What You Will Be Doing
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of complex Java performance issues across the full technology stack, including application code, JVM, middleware, databases, operating systems, infrastructure, and external dependencies.
  • Analyze JVM and application behaviour including memory utilization, garbage collection, threading, concurrency, CPU usage, connection management, application-server configuration, latency, and throughput.
  • Use profiling, observability, thread dumps, heap dumps, database analysis, and other diagnostic techniques to identify root causes and recommend improvements to scalability, stability, and resource utilization.
  • Evaluate application architecture and design scalable, maintainable, and high-performing Java solutions across traditional, distributed, cloud, and modernized environments.
  • Lead technical discovery sessions, architecture workshops, performance assessments, and solution-design discussions with clients and internal teams.
  • Produce and present technical findings, architecture recommendations, root-cause analyses, remediation plans, and implementation roadmaps while serving as a senior technical escalation point throughout delivery.

What You Must Have
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10+ years of experience designing, developing, troubleshooting, and architecting complex enterprise applications, with demonstrated experience in a senior architecture, principal engineering, or technical leadership role.
  • Deep hands-on experience with Java and JVM performance optimization, including memory management, garbage collection, threading, concurrency, heap/thread analysis, JVM tuning, profiling, latency, and throughput.
  • Experience with enterprise Java frameworks and application servers such as Spring/Spring Boot, WebSphere, WebLogic, JBoss/WildFly, Tomcat, Open Liberty, or comparable technologies.
  • Strong experience diagnosing production performance issues across multiple layers, including application code, JVM, middleware, database, operating system, infrastructure, and network dependencies.
  • Experience with application performance monitoring, observability, and diagnostic tools such as Dynatrace, AppDynamics, New Relic, Datadog, Splunk, Java Flight Recorder, Java Mission Control, VisualVM, or comparable tools.
  • Strong understanding of database performance, scalability, capacity planning, resource utilization, and application-to-database interactions.
  • Strong client-facing communication, technical documentation, presentation, problem-solving, and stakeholder-management skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting high-volume, low-latency, transaction-intensive, or mission-critical Java applications.
  • Experience with distributed systems, microservices, APIs, cloud platforms, Docker, Kubernetes, or hybrid-cloud architectures.
  • Experience with performance and load-testing tools such as JMeter, Gatling, LoadRunner, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience with enterprise databases such as DB2, Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with application modernization, platform transformation, DevOps, SRE, or production-support environments.
  • Experience working in consulting, professional services, or client-facing delivery environments.

Employment Details
This opportunity is primarily intended as a permanent, full-time position. We would also consider a highly experienced consultant for an initial 12-month contract engagement.
