Their primary role is to design, develop, and maintain automated test scripts to ensure the functionality and quality of software applications. Java SDETs work closely with development teams to identify bugs, improve code quality, and ensure that software meets business requirements. They typically use testing frameworks like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, and may also be involved in performance and security testing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java SDET?

To thrive as a Java SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test), you need strong programming skills in Java, a solid understanding of software testing principles, and experience with test automation frameworks, often backed by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with tools such as Selenium, TestNG, JUnit, Jenkins, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for identifying issues and collaborating with development teams. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable software through efficient automated testing and cross-team cooperation.

How does a Java SDET typically collaborate with developers and QA teams during the software development lifecycle?

A Java SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) works closely with both developers and QA teams to ensure high-quality software releases. They participate in sprint planning, code reviews, and daily standups, offering automation solutions and identifying potential test gaps. Java SDETs often design and maintain test frameworks, automate test cases, and integrate testing into CI/CD pipelines. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as they must align testing strategies with development objectives and quickly address issues found during automated and manual testing.

This is a role within Chamberlain Group's Engineering team. The SDET Level 3 is a highly skilled senior-level engineer responsible for delivering robust test automation solutions across web, API, and mobile platforms. With a strong foundation in modern QA engineering practices, this role focuses on developing scalable automation frameworks, supporting CI/CD processes, and ensuring high-quality software releases in fast-paced Agile environments. The SDET Level 3 collaborates closely with cross-functional teams-including developers, product owners, and DevOps engineers-to ensure testability and quality are built into the product from the start. The ideal candidate has a strong grasp of software development principles, BDD practices, and automation architecture, and is passionate about improving quality through code.

Job Responsiblities:

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable test automation frameworks for web, mobile, and API testing (Playwright/WebDriverIO/Appium).
  • Lead automation development for user stories and features, ensuring functional, regression, and integration coverage.
  • Collaborate with developers, product managers, and QE peers to define acceptance criteria, build test strategies, and ensure complete test coverage.
  • Develop BDD-style test cases using tools such as Cucumber or SpecFlow and ensure traceability from requirements to test coverage.
  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions) and actively troubleshoot failures.
  • Validate RESTful APIs using Postman, Swagger, or similar tools; build API automation frameworks with Karate, or other libraries.
  • Conduct exploratory, cross-browser, and cross-platform testing and ensure consistent user experiences on Android/iOS web and native apps.
  • Participate in code/test reviews, sprint planning, retrospectives, and Agile ceremonies to advocate for quality and testability.
  • Summarize test results, raise high-quality defect reports, and contribute to Go/No-Go release decisions
  • Assist in incorporating AI-based tools to accelerate test execution or flakiness detection (optional but preferred).
  • Provide mentorship to junior quality engineers and help promote a quality-first mindset across the team.
  • Comply with health and safety guidelines and rules; managers should also ensure compliance across their teams.
  • Protect Chamberlain Group's reputation by keeping information confidential.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reading professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing related results and participating on projects as needed.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related field
  • 5-8 years of hands-on experience in software quality engineering, with a minimum of 3 years focused on automation.
  • Solid experience in JavaScript/TypeScript with frameworks such as Playwright, WebDriverIO, or Cypress.
  • Hands-on experience testing RESTful APIs and working with API automation tools such as Karate, Restassured using java or similar.
  • Proven experience working in Agile development environments and contributing to sprint-based delivery.
  • Experience working with cloud-based platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP) and microservice architectures.
  • Experience in integrating test automation into CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with test management (TestRail, QMetry), bug tracking (JIRA), and version control systems (Git).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and test automation frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of QE methodologies, software development lifecycles, and Agile practices.
  • Strong experience in BDD/TDD practices and writing executable test specifications.
  • Comfortable testing across web, mobile, and API layers.
  • Strong debugging and analytical skills to identify root causes of issues in complex systems.

  • Good interpersonal and written communication skills to collaborate with distributed teams.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative in solving problems and improving processes.

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Quality Assurance certifications (ISTQB or similar).
  • Cloud platform certifications (AWS, Azure).
  • Exposure to AI-based testing accelerators (e.g., model-based testing, smart selectors).
  • Experience in testing IoT or embedded systems (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Experience with non-relational databases like Couchbase or Neo4J.
