A Java Developer Startup job involves designing, developing, and maintaining Java-based applications in a fast-paced startup environment. Developers work on scalable solutions, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and adapt to evolving product requirements. Unlike corporate roles, startup jobs often require versatility, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with limited resources.

What kind of work environment and team structure can I expect as a Java Developer in a startup?

As a Java Developer in a startup, you'll typically work in a small, agile team where roles can be fluid and collaboration is highly encouraged. You may have the opportunity to work closely with product managers, designers, and other developers, allowing for greater input into the overall direction of the product. Daily responsibilities often extend beyond coding to include brainstorming sessions, code reviews, and quick iteration based on user feedback. The environment is fast-paced, offering opportunities for rapid skill development and taking on new responsibilities as the company grows. This setting is ideal for those who enjoy problem-solving, continuous learning, and making a direct impact on the product and business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Java Developer Startup position, and why are they important?

A successful Java Developer in a startup environment should have strong proficiency in Java, object-oriented programming principles, and experience with frameworks like Spring or Hibernate, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), CI/CD pipelines, and cloud platforms is highly valued, and industry certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional can be advantageous. Soft skills like adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and clear communication help developers collaborate in small, fast-paced teams. These competencies are essential for quickly delivering high-quality software and driving innovation in the dynamic startup landscape.

Job description

Title: Senior Software Engineer โ€“ Agentic AI Analytics (Rust / Data Systems)
Location: Glendale, CA โ€“ structured hybrid (in-office component required)
Compensation: 200,000 โ€“ 240,000 base + equity/benefits (DOE)

***NO C2C OR VISA CANDIDATES CAN BE ACCCEPTED***

Our client is building the next generation of AI-powered analytics so brands can finally see, in real time, which advertising actually works and why. This Senior Software Engineer role sits directly with the CTO on a highly visible initiative to build an agentic, AI-driven analytics engine from the ground up using Rust, Java, and modern OLAP concepts.

If you like owning hard performance problems, designing columnar/vectorized systems, and shipping code that powers decisions for the worldโ€™s biggest brands, this is a true impact seat, not a maintenance job.

Why this role

  • Direct access to the CTO and a small, senior team driving our core AI analytics strategy, not a side project.
  • Greenfield build of an Advanced Analytics Engine with vectorized query processing, columnar storage, and OLAP capabilities aimed at sub-second performance on marketing datasets.
  • Heavy Rust and Java engineering with deep performance tuning, profiling, and hardware-aware optimization on large-scale cloud-native data systems.
  • High-growth, ad measurement / analytics space with massive data volume, where your work shapes how brands, agencies, and media companies measure outcomes.
  • Structured hybrid in Glendale, CA with strong comp, equity, and full benefits, plus a culture that emphasizes performance, learning, and fun.

Ideal candidate snapshot

  • 12+ years total software engineering, including 5+ years architecting or building high-performance data/analytics or OLAP systems; 3+ years hands-on, production Rust, ideally having come from Java.
  • Deep knowledge of columnar data engines, vectorized execution, query/dataframe optimization, and performance engineering at the system and hardware levels.
  • Strong AWS experience (designing, deploying, and optimizing scalable data and compute systems in the cloud).
  • Systems thinker who sees software, data, and infrastructure as one cohesive system; comfortable in fast-moving, startup-like environments.
  • Solid statistics / data analysis foundation; bonus for exposure to AI-driven analytics and engines like Apache DataFusion, DuckDB, ClickHouse/chDB, or for refactoring large brownfield systems.
