The Principal Medical Science Liaison (PMSL) is considered the field-based scientific and clinical knowledge senior most expert on current and future Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine Oncology products. He/she serves as a strategic scientific partner and maintains deep understanding of the evolving scientific, clinical, and treatment landscape within assigned therapeutic areas to shape medical engagement, patient care, and territory strategy at the local, regional, or national level.
The Principal MSL will support the Field Director in developing and translating the national medical affairs strategy to regional KOL & HCP engagement plans, ensuring these strategies support appropriate territory management and scientific exchange; act as a delegate for Field Director when needed.
The Principal MSL is responsible for establishing and maintaining professional relationships with medical thought leaders and health care provider teams, providing fair balanced, objective, non-promotional scientific information, and education to health care professionals and to internal partners. The Principal MSL shapes high-impact, and individualized scientific discussions through deep, trusted relationships and drives alignment through sophisticated scientific dialogue. The P-MSL is responsible for staying abreast of current scientific and treatment landscape trends in therapeutic areas of interest by critically evaluating the quality, relevance, and applicability of emerging data.
Essential Functions
The Principal Medical Science Liaison will:
  • Lead strategic, comprehensive territory planning by identifying and cultivating strong community, academic, and opinion leader relationships; executing high-quality, two-way scientific exchange; mentoring peers on territory strategy design and execution; and consolidating, translating, and cross-functionally sharing insights to guide organizational understanding and TA strategy.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute a field strategic plan, proactively identifying resource gaps and introducing innovative ideas, programs, and solutions that enhance field impact and support leadership priorities.
  • Serve as a field lead for pre- and post-launch activities, analyzing competitor data, clinical evidence, and scientific positioning to differentiate Innovative Medicine's profile and influence therapeutic area strategy.
  • Respond to unsolicited scientific inquiries from HCPs, investigators, healthcare systems, and academic centers by integrating clinical data, real-world evidence, and scientific insights into practical, audience-appropriate communication that meets customer and population health needs.

Research & Evidence Generation Leadership
  • Identifies, develops, and executes high-level research support for company- and investigator-initiated initiatives:
    • Leverages knowledge of standards of care, Janssen sponsored and investigator initiated trials, and competitor landscape to facilitate external / internal research communication.
    • Engages with external investigators regarding unsolicited research inquiries and acts as liaison to R&D, Medical Affairs, and operations teams.
    • Provide appropriate scientific support for investigator-initiated studies, including facilitating scientific exchange and connecting investigators with internal research and grant processes, in accordance with applicable policies and without assuming sponsor responsibilities.
    • Anticipates shifts in the competitive and scientific environment and their implications for evidence generation and scientific positioning.
    • Principal Level MSL leads on strategic roles/projects with team wide impact and influence.

Scientific Acumen & Thought Leadership
Consistently demonstrates strong scientific acumen:
  • Actively participates in and leads journal club scientific dialogue, understands current standards of care, and regularly shares scientific updates with team members.
  • Serve as a scientific leader at external engagements by attending and providing leadership at scientific conferences, congresses, symposia, advisory boards, investigator meetings, and approved scientific speaking opportunities, representing J&J with credibility and expertise.
  • Medical Insights: actively listens for, documents, synthesizes, and shares medical insights with MSL teams and cross-functional partners.
  • Sets aside time for self-driven learning on scientific landscape, clinical trial methodology, and research standards.
  • Shapes the scientific exchange landscape by
  • supporting expert advisory activities, contributing to the development of scientific materials and frameworks, and ensuring data shared is timely, relevant, and clinically meaningful.

Department Operations & Internal Collaboration
  • Support department operations and Medical Affairs execution by partnering with the Field Director to translate medical strategy into national KOL and territory plans, acting as delegate when needed, and supporting effective execution of Medical Affairs plans across individual territories.
  • Compliantly drive strong cross-functional collaboration by communicating routinely with medical, commercial, RWV&E, and [Insert TA] MSL partners; building broad internal networks; and serving as a trusted field expert and strategic collaborator across Medical Affairs.
  • Perform all administrative and operational responsibilities in a timely, accurate, and compliant manner, demonstrating expert knowledge of industry regulations, healthcare compliance requirements, ethical conduct standards, corporate policies, and Medical Affairs SOPs.
  • Leverage AI tools and insights to enhance decision-making, streamline processes, improve efficiency, and optimize outcomes across core responsibilities and internal partnerships.

Qualifications:
  • A Doctorate level degree or equivalent experience is required (PharmD, PhD, MD, Advanced Practice Providers, etc.); Post graduate experience is required for Doctoral level candidates, with preference for therapeutic clinical experience. Residency/fellowship preferred.
  • Minimum of 6+ years of relevant work experience as an MSL
  • Ability to support travel up to 70% which includes overnight travel, including some weekend commitments such as meetings, congresses, etc.
  • Proficiency in data gathering and analysis, clinical expertise, problem solving, interpersonal influence, and cross functional collaboration strategic thinking and competitive landscape analysis.
  • Must reside in defined territory and have a valid U.S. driver's license

Preferred:
  • Knowledge or experience therapeutic area
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CoPilot and utilization of computers and remote technologies.
  • Related clinical, research, or pharma work experience.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $164,000 and $328,000. This position is eligible for a company car through the Company's FLEET program. The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis. Employees may be eligible to participate in Company employee benefit programs such as health insurance, savings plan, pension plan, disability plan, vacation pay, sick time, holiday pay, and work, personal and family time off in accordance with the terms of the applicable plans.
