What is an IT/OT job?

An IT/OT job focuses on bridging information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) to ensure seamless integration between business systems and industrial control systems. Professionals in this role work on cybersecurity, network infrastructure, and data flow between enterprise and production environments. They help organizations improve efficiency, security, and connectivity across digital and physical systems.

What is the difference between OT and IT technology?

In the context of IT jobs, IT (Information Technology) refers to computer systems, networks, software, and data management used in business environments. OT (Operational Technology) involves hardware and software that monitor and control physical processes, such as manufacturing or infrastructure systems. IT professionals typically focus on data and network security, while OT specialists work with industrial control systems and real-time operations.

What other jobs can you do as an OT?

Occupational Therapists (OTs) can work in various settings such as hospitals, clinics, schools, and rehabilitation centers. They may also transition into roles like occupational therapy assistants, case managers, health educators, or research specialists, often requiring additional certifications or training. OTs utilize skills in patient assessment, treatment planning, and therapeutic interventions across diverse populations.

What are some typical daily responsibilities of an IT OT professional?

IT OT professionals are responsible for managing, maintaining, and securing the integration points between information technology networks and operational technology systems, such as industrial control or manufacturing equipment. Their day often involves monitoring system performance, troubleshooting connectivity or cybersecurity issues, implementing software updates or patches, and collaborating with both IT and operations teams to ensure seamless data flow and operational continuity. They also participate in planning and deploying new technology initiatives and may conduct risk assessments or compliance checks. This dynamic environment requires strong technical expertise and excellent communication skills to support both business and technical goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the It Ot position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IT OT professional, you need a solid understanding of both information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) systems, usually demonstrated by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with industrial control systems (ICS), SCADA, cybersecurity frameworks, and certifications like CompTIA Security+ or ISA/IEC 62443 is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, excellent communication, and the capacity to work collaboratively across IT and operations teams are crucial soft skills. These abilities help bridge the gap between IT and OT environments, ensuring secure, efficient, and reliable industrial operations.

What is the highest paid IT job?

The highest paid IT jobs are often executive roles such as Chief Information Officer (CIO) or Chief Technology Officer (CTO), with senior cybersecurity executives and cloud architects also earning high salaries. These roles typically require extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership skills, and they often involve strategic decision-making and managing large teams or budgets.

Which 3 jobs will survive AI?

IT roles such as cybersecurity specialists, network administrators, and cloud engineers are expected to persist as they require complex problem-solving, specialized knowledge, and human oversight. These jobs involve managing and securing technology infrastructure, which AI is less likely to fully automate in the near term.
