What is an IT Manager Project Manager?

IT Manager Project Managers are professionals who oversee and coordinate technology-related projects within an organization. They combine responsibilities of managing IT teams and ensuring that projects are completed on time, within scope, and on budget. These managers work closely with stakeholders to define project goals, allocate resources, and mitigate risks. They also ensure that the IT infrastructure and solutions align with the organization's strategic objectives, often acting as a bridge between technical teams and business leaders.

How do IT Manager Project Managers balance technical oversight with strategic project leadership in their daily responsibilities?

IT Manager Project Managers are often required to juggle both technical and managerial duties. On a typical day, they might lead project planning meetings, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and address technical challenges, all while ensuring projects align with business objectives. Balancing these responsibilities involves prioritizing tasks, delegating effectively, and maintaining open communication channels with both technical staff and upper management. This dual focus not only helps deliver projects on time and within budget, but also fosters a collaborative and adaptable work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT Manager Project Manager?

To thrive as an IT Manager Project Manager, you need a solid background in IT systems, project management methodologies, and a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Asana, or Microsoft Project, as well as experience with IT infrastructure and software development lifecycles, is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you guide teams and manage stakeholders effectively. These competencies ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and aligned with organizational goals.

Job description

Contribute to the successful realisation of the project portfolio by executing a number of IT projects simultaneously in a structured manner. This in order to implement skeyes' strategy.

What does a skeyes IT project manager do?

After initial capture and validation of an initiative, it is up to the IT project manager to define a tailor-made approach in consultation with the parties involved. This tailor-made approach takes into account the specific project context, existing project standards as well as the needs of the in-company customer.

This includes among other things:

  • Defining the scope and validating it with relevant stakeholders.
  • Determining material, human and financial resources and verifying that these resources are or will be available.
  • Drawing up a customised governance, which provides for regular consultation for progress reporting and steering as well as defining and communicating roles and responsibilities.
  • Developing a planning that takes into account the various steps to be completed within the project process, as well as the mutual and external dependencies, in consultation with the necessary experts.
  • Guaranteeing quality of delivery by drawing up a test strategy that provides for the necessary test cycles and validations.
  • Defining a tailor-made communication plan.

In addition to implementing these essential fundamentals in terms of project approach, it is up to the IT project manager to take a leading role within project execution, report progress, detect problems in a timely manner and mitigate them appropriately as well as forge a cohesive project team for productive collaboration.

This includes among other things:

  • Stimulating individual motivation, teamwork, as well as realising a productive relationship with external suppliers.
  • Following up on the project plan and supporting the project team in its implementation.
  • In coordination with our procurement department, taking a leading role in defining and evaluating public tenders.
  • Identifying, reporting and mitigating risk factors that may lead to delays or blockages in project implementation.
  • Ensuring that all parties involved are aware of the state of play, the main risks and challenges as well as the decisions taken.
  • Ensuring that the project is delivered in a structured manner in accordance with the applicable procedures as well as initially specified project dimensions (budget, time, scope, quality).
  • Coordinating test activities and associated release validations for quality assurance purposes.
  • Providing hand-over after project implementation to ensure its integration into daily activities without adversely affecting them.
What makes you the perfect IT project manager?
  • You have a good command of English combined with Dutch or French.
  • You are able to build up valuable business relations in the short term and use these in an appropriate way through effective communication.
  • You are naturally comfortable with a leadership role and have the ability to introduce structure and clarity to a project environment in a pragmatic and gradual way.
  • You easily find your way in technological concepts within the ICT domain regardless of the underlying technologies and protocols.
  • You have extensive experience in project management proven by successful project implementations within a complex and mature business environment.
  • You have experience in successfully engaging management and groups of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • You have practical knowledge of one or more project management frameworks, Prince2 (practitioner level), Project Management Professional (PMP) or Agile Project Management (SAFe, PSM).
