What is AS400 used for?

AS400, also known as IBM iSeries, is a midrange server used primarily for business applications, including enterprise resource planning, database management, and transaction processing. Iseries support professionals often work with the system's operating environment, programming languages, and hardware to ensure reliable operation and system integration.

Is AS400 still used today?

As an iSeries Support professional, you should know that IBM's AS/400, now called IBM iSeries, is still actively used in many industries for enterprise applications due to its reliability and security. While newer systems have emerged, many organizations continue to run legacy applications on IBM iSeries servers, and skills in this environment remain valuable. Maintenance, troubleshooting, and modernization of these systems are common tasks for support roles.

What is iSeries Support?

iSeries Support refers to the maintenance, troubleshooting, and management of IBM i (formerly known as AS/400 or iSeries) systems. It involves tasks such as system monitoring, user administration, software updates, backup and recovery, and ensuring optimal performance. Professionals in this role help organizations keep their IBM i environments running smoothly, secure, and up to date. They may also assist with integrating legacy applications and providing technical support to users.

Why does Costco still use AS400?

As an Iseries Support professional, understanding why companies like Costco still use AS400 systems is important. Many organizations continue to rely on AS400 for its reliability, security, and ability to handle large-scale transaction processing, often due to the high cost and complexity of migrating to newer platforms. Maintaining expertise in legacy systems like AS400 is valuable for supporting ongoing operations and ensuring system stability.

Is the iSeries a mainframe?

The iSeries, now known as IBM i or AS/400, is not a mainframe but a midrange server designed for business applications. It runs its own operating system and is often used for enterprise resource planning, database management, and support roles like iSeries Support. Mainframes are larger, more powerful systems used for large-scale processing, whereas iSeries systems are more accessible for smaller to medium-sized businesses.
