Job Summary
The Facilities Technician helps ensure the cleanliness, safety, functionality, and overall appearance of the Indianapolis Art Center's facilities, grounds, and properties. This position performs routine maintenance, cleaning, groundskeeping, minor repairs, and preventative maintenance while helping create a safe and welcoming environment for Team Members, students, visitors, and guests.
Work Schedule
Part-Time | 25-30 hours per week
Regular Schedule:
  • Tuesday-Friday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

The Facilities Technician will generally maintain a Tuesday-through-Saturday schedule. To support special events, facility emergencies, and other operational needs, up to five (5) hours of the weekly schedule may occasionally be adjusted to evening or alternate weekend hours with reasonable advance notice from management. Total scheduled hours will not exceed 30 hours per week.
Job Responsibilities
  • Help maintain the daily physical appearance, cleanliness, safety, and functionality of the Art Center facility and grounds.
  • Perform daily walkthroughs of the facility and grounds and weekly checks of adjacent properties to identify safety, cleanliness, or maintenance needs.
  • Follow routine cleaning, groundskeeping, preventative maintenance, and deep-cleaning schedules.
  • Complete assigned work orders and respond to routine facility maintenance needs in a timely manner.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance involving plumbing, carpentry, painting, basic electrical work, and other building systems as appropriate.
  • Perform special maintenance projects and periodic cleaning, including painting and between-semester deep cleaning.
  • Assist with monitoring fire and safety requirements throughout the facility, including safe storage of materials, fire detection and prevention systems, and ADA accessibility.
  • Partner with the Education Department to identify and address studio maintenance and facility needs.
  • Coordinate and work collaboratively with other full-time and part-time personnel and volunteers performing maintenance, housekeeping, and groundskeeping responsibilities.
  • Provide back-up support for maintenance, housekeeping, and groundskeeping functions as needed to ensure essential work is completed.
  • Assist with coordinating outside service providers, including snow removal, pest control, and other facility-related vendors.
  • Help maintain schedules for major maintenance projects and communicate identified needs, progress, and concerns to management.
  • Support building and grounds security and communicate with the security company, police, fire department, or other emergency services when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and organized records related to building systems, maintenance activities, and facility layouts as assigned.
  • Safely store and maintain cleaning, maintenance, and other facility supplies and equipment.
  • Work with the Operations and Marketing Directors on facility signage related to safety and security as needed.
  • Support major Art Center-sponsored events as scheduled.
  • Participate in appropriate Art Center meetings and communicate effectively with internal departments regarding facility needs.
  • Drive off-site to obtain supplies or assist with the transportation of materials and heavy goods as needed.
  • Follow established budget, purchasing, and reporting procedures related to assigned facility responsibilities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the safe and effective operation of the Indianapolis Art Center.

Additional Education, Knowledge, and Skills
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems, plumbing, carpentry, and basic electrical work.
  • General knowledge of building maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance practices.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Basic landscaping and irrigation experience preferred.
  • Ability to identify maintenance and safety concerns and determine when additional assistance or outside expertise is needed.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and communicate effectively when needs or priorities change.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors, including during inclement or extreme weather conditions.
  • Must be able to safely climb ladders 20 feet or higher, work on rooftops, and operate or work from tall scissor lifts as required.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to work safely around paint fumes, cleaning chemicals, and other potentially caustic substances.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • This is an on-site position and requires regular in-person work at the Indianapolis Art Center.
