Position Overview and Responsibilities:

John D. MacArthur Beach State Park is looking for a self-motivated park service professional to fill an OPS Park Ranger position. Applicants will preferably have ability to perform landscaping and outdoor work, exceptional visitor service, and strong work ethic. The applicant must work well with other members of the team and also be able to work independently in both the ranger station and in the field. Applicants must be able to work rotating shifts including nights, holidays, and weekends.

Compliance with the processing requirements of Chapter 215.422, F.S. is mandatory.  Persistent failure to comply with this section by any agency of the state shall constitute good cause for discharge of employees duly found responsible, or predominantly responsible, for failure to comply.  In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department's Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.

This is a temporary OPS Park Ranger position working 24-29 hours per week at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park.  This position does not include insurance or benefits. 

MAINTENANCE

Picks up ground litter and empties trash cans.  Cleans office and restroom, maintains and repairs small buildings, fences, trails, service roads, fire lanes, boardwalks, picnic sites, and all other necessary facilities.  May operate a variety of equipment including chainsaws, weed eaters, and lawn mowers.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Performs exotic plant removal under the supervision of the Park Services Specialist.  Assists with imperiled species monitoring.  May assist with prescribed fire program.

VISITOR SERVICES

Explains the facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment and education; meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions; operates cash register.  Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations. Works in the ranger station.

ADMINISTRATION

Prepares reports in a timely manner including daily financial reports, timesheets, vehicle logs, maintenance logs, and rainfall reports.

PROTECTION

Ensures park rules are enforced pertaining to all natural, historical and archaeological facilities and resources and use thereof for the enjoyment of the visitor.

Performs related work as required.

Position of Special Trust Requirement:

This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.

Pay:

$15.00 per hour

A unique mixture of coastal and tropical hammock and mangrove forest, this barrier island provides a haven for several rare or endangered native tropical and coastal plant species. 

The park's nature center shows visitors why the park is a biological treasure. Visitors can swim, picnic and surf at the beach; snorkeling is also a popular activity.

Birdwatchers may see herons, brown pelicans, terns, sandpipers and gulls.

Anglers can fish in the lagoon by wading or kayaking. Additionally, visitors can fish from non-swimming areas of the beach.
