Job description

Associate Counsel
O'Connell Electric Company is looking for a hard-working and well-qualified attorney to fill the role of Associate Counsel. This person will report to the company's Chief Administrative Officer and will work closely with and take direction from the Company's Associate General Counsel. They will collaborate with numerous other members of the O'Connell Team on a wide range of issues that impact the Company's construction business.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, self-driven, detail-oriented, and possesses excellent communication skills. The company is seeking a candidate who is humble and collaborates well with numerous groups; someone who truly enjoys analytical reading and engaging with others to solve complex issues that arise within the context of running a construction company.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Review, analyze, and negotiate a wide range of construction-related agreements;
  • Assist the company in efforts to ensure compliance with contractual requirements and company policies.
  • Assist company with efforts to proactively identify, assess, and mitigate legal and financial risks associated with construction projects;
  • Assist with efforts to ensure projects comply with local, state, and federal laws and regulations;
  • Assist with efforts to avoid and resolve construction claims and disputes, including gathering, reviewing, and organizing evidence;
  • Assist with day-to-day tracking and management of legal department workflow;
  • Draft and proof edit legal documents and correspondence;
  • Prepare summaries and memos about proposed legal documents including contracts;
  • Organize, manage, store, and retrieve files;
  • Track and manage deadlines;
  • Coordinate and schedule meetings;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active membership in the New York State Bar.
  • Recent graduates sitting for the New York State Bar Exam may be considered if the candidate has demonstrated strong academic performance and work ethic.
  • Prior legal internship, externship, or clerkship experience preferred, particularly in construction, labor/employment, commercial contracts, litigation, or corporate law
  • The ability to provide professional references is preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
  • Daily physical presence at corporate headquarters.
  • Travel may be required throughout the Northeast, including Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany and Pennsylvania.

Compensation
The minimum and maximum annual salary (or hourly rates) that O'Connell Electric Company believes in good faith to be accurate for this position at the time of this posting is $85,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year.
