Job description

OBAYASHI CORPORATION is seeking a qualified Tunnel Field Engineer intern with an interest in Tunneling and/or Underground Projects in the USA.
KEY ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is expected to start in May/June 2027 and continue through August/September 2027, if available. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time and on-site, for most internships.
Contribute to and learn about tunneling and underground projects (TBM tunnels, SEM tunnels, micro-tunneling, shafts, mining, and any other underground structure works) undertaken by Obayashi Corporation to manage self-perform activities and coordinate subcontractors' work.
  • Assist with daily field operations.
  • Take directions from Project Engineers and Managers for day-to-day tasks
  • Follow all safety procedures on the job site and report violations immediately to management
  • Assist with scheduling subcontractors and vendors, working with suppliers as required, facilitating the handling and expediting delivery of materials
  • Perform quality control duties.
  • Maintain daily logs (written and photos) as required regarding job progress, costs, material usage, etc.
  • Coordinate required inspections with local jurisdictions
  • Identify potential hazards and report them to supervisors to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Field engineering, operation planning, cost control, project scheduling, quantity tracking, material procurement, contract administration, estimating & supervision of field activities
  • Performing engineering tasks requiring standard techniques and handling minor problems of a technical nature arising during construction
  • Investigating problems and/or reported incidents; identifying and recommending solutions/alternatives as appropriate.
  • Reviewing plans and specifications to determine material requirements (quantities and qualities), pricing of materials, etc.
  • Travel to various job sites to gain exposure to different phases of construction.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a record of collaboration and teamwork
  • Have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Willingness to travel and work in outdoor environments
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute to team success
  • Basic understanding of construction and documentation is a plus

OTHER:
  • Ability to walk and work on outdoor construction job sites.
  • Ability to carry and/or lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Have the ability to work underground
  • Reliable transportation to and from work
  • Must have a valid Driver's License

HOURLY PAY RANGES:
  • $25-30/ HOUR

The expected pay range for this position is $25.00 to $30.00 per hour. Obayashi Corporation provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what it reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
