Job description

The San Francisco Standard is seeking a Summer 2026 growth marketing intern to help drive subscriber acquisition, engagement, and retention for one of the fastest-growing local newsrooms in the country. As an intern, you will work directly with the Head of Growth and the growth team to execute campaigns across paid media, email, and events and get hands-on experience turning data and storytelling into subscription growth.

A successful candidate is equally comfortable crafting compelling marketing copy and digging into performance analytics. This position is ideal for a motivated self-starter who is passionate about the intersection of journalism, marketing, and the future of local news in San Francisco.

Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and execution of paid media campaigns across Meta, Google, and other platforms assisting with audience targeting, copy, and creative testing
  • Draft and edit marketing copy for subscription campaigns, landing pages, promotional emails, and event materials
  • Assist with email marketing including drafting, scheduling, and analyzing campaigns for both subscriber acquisition and retention
  • Support events promotion for SF Standard reader events, sponsorships, and community activations helping create assets and drive attendance
  • Monitor and report on performance across marketing channels using tools like Amplitude and Google Analytics, flagging trends and opportunities
  • Conduct competitive and audience research to help shape campaign strategy and messaging
  • Pitch and execute creative ideas that help The Standard reach and convert new subscribers in San Francisco and beyond

Requirements

  • Proven ability to write compelling, high converting copy quickly whether for a subject line, a Facebook ad, or an event landing page
  • At least one prior internship or professional experience in marketing, growth, or a related field
  • Familiarity with email marketing platforms, paid social, or analytics tools or genuine eagerness to learn them fast
  • Willingness to support on-site events with the marketing and editorial teams as needed
  • Ability to monitor performance data, draw clear conclusions, and translate them into actionable recommendations
  • Excellent verbal communication and collaboration skills
  • Willingness to learn, take feedback, and move quickly in a fast-paced newsroom environment
  • Enthusiasm for bringing fresh ideas to subscriber growth, making the best of emerging tools and technologies, in keeping with the spirit of The Standard's innovative newsroom
  • A genuine curiosity about San Francisco its politics, culture, and the people shaping its future


This is an in-office position in our San Francisco office, with occasional remote work depending on the days/times of your shifts. Start date is flexible, May/June, 2026.

This internship pays $25 per hour, and may be part-time or full-time.
