Civil Field Engineer Intern

Location: TX (exact location depends on assigned project)

Overview

As a Civil Field Engineer Intern, you will engage in various work assignments, tasks, and activities of varying complexity while applying standard engineering techniques & procedures. The ideal candidate will be pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or another Engineering or Construction-related field and will be strongly considering a career in power generation or large-scale/industrial construction following graduation. This position will be based at our project site located just outside of the Austin, TX area - if you are not local to the site itself, Gemma will help to cover some of your travel & lodging expenses.


Position Summary

Join Gemma’s growing construction team! The Civil Field Engineer Intern is primarily responsible for supporting construction activities by planning, organizing, & implementing the project controls system, assisting with subcontracts & material management, and supporting purchasing & scheduling. Candidates should possess a commitment to top quality and an unwavering work ethic, be able to identify conflicts & provide solutions, and have a vast attention to detail.


Responsibilities

  • Understand the Scope of Work (SOW), contract, plans, and specifications.
  • Interface & collaborate with Superintendents to identify discrepancies in documentation and obtain solutions.
  • Review technical changes requested by field supervisor.
  • Expedite testing reports, review for specification compliance, and provide to Quality Control.
  • Help ensure federal, state, and local compliance codes, compliance of drawings, and permit drawings including SWPPP and NPDES.
  • Assist with the scheduling of building inspectors and code officials.
  • Provide documentation for change order requests.
  • Interface with the Subcontract Administrator on management of subcontractors and major purchase orders.
  • Review documentation & assist in the management of the process required for the completion of all Engineering Change Notifications (ECNs).
  • Conduct field verification of quantities installed for Quantitative Performance Report (QPR).
  • Support field cost estimating as required.
  • Prepare & maintain mark-ups and review as-builts.
  • Review turnover documentation with Superintendents for compliance and completeness.
  • Work with Logistics and Receiving to ensure timely delivery of materials.
  • Create & track Requests for Information (RFIs) as required.
  • Prepare material requisitions for discipline Superintendents and coordinate with material suppliers for specification compliance.
  • Provide field verification to confirm existing conditions are in compliance with job specifications.
  • Coordinate with Superintendent to schedule field testing subcontractors (concrete/soils).
  • Generate & track punch list items.
  • Track & record lessons learned.

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Power Engineering, or another Engineering or Construction-related area of study.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft programs, particularly Excel.
