How much do internship software defined radio engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for internship software defined radio engineer in the United States is $25.42, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.67 and $28.85 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What types of projects and technologies will I typically work with as an Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer?

As an Internship Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineer, you will often work on projects involving the development, simulation, and testing of wireless communication systems using SDR platforms like GNU Radio or USRP devices. Your daily tasks may include writing and debugging code in languages such as Python or C++, configuring radio hardware, and analyzing signal data to improve system performance. You'll collaborate closely with senior engineers and researchers, gaining hands-on experience in areas like modulation, demodulation, and digital signal processing. This exposure provides an excellent foundation for understanding real-world wireless communication challenges and prepares you for advanced roles in radio frequency engineering.

What is the difference between Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer vs Software Defined Radio Engineer?

AspectInternship Software Defined Radio EngineerSoftware Defined Radio Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed a relevant degree; no professional certification requiredBachelor's or master's in electrical engineering or related field; certifications like FCC or industry-specific credentials may be preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, often in research labs or tech companies, supervised and learning-focusedFull-time professional roles in R&D, product development, or communications companies
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies for training, talent development, and research projectsUsed in industry for designing, developing, and testing SDR systems and applications

The main difference is that an Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer is a learning position aimed at gaining experience, while a Software Defined Radio Engineer is a full-time professional role with greater responsibilities and expertise in SDR technology.

What does an Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer do?

An Internship Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineer assists with the development, testing, and optimization of radio communication systems that use software to process signals instead of traditional hardware components. Interns typically support senior engineers by working on tasks like signal analysis, coding in languages such as Python or C++, and using SDR platforms like GNU Radio or USRP. This role provides hands-on experience with radio frequency (RF) concepts, digital signal processing, and wireless communication protocols. Interns also gain exposure to debugging, documentation, and the integration of SDR solutions into larger communication systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of digital signal processing, wireless communication principles, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or C++, typically supported by coursework or a degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with SDR platforms like GNU Radio, MATLAB, or USRP hardware, as well as relevant certifications or lab experience, is highly valuable. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills to excel in collaborative and research-driven environments. These skills and qualifications enable successful development, testing, and innovation in radio communication systems.

Job description

The Roleย

You will be responsible for leading the design, development, and integration of digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms for communication systems and beyond to be hosted on some of the biggest, most powerful, rapidly designed and rapidly manufactured satellites ever deployed in space. In your first 6 months you will architect, develop, own, test, and integrate new DSP algorithms and software defined radio (SDR) systems for satellite communications and beyond. You will work with a team of fellow RF, FPGA, software, mechanical, and electrical engineers in order to prototype your systems and refine your designs. In your first two years you will have flown your system in space.ย

Responsibilitiesย

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of DSP algorithms for embedded devices and SDRsย
  • Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of software and hardware engineers to develop software defined radio systemsย
  • Act as technical leader and subject-matter expert helping to teach, grow, and mentor others in the teamย

Qualificationsย

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or related science, technology, engineering, or mathematics fieldย
  • 8+ years of experience in RF digital communications and DSP systemsย
  • Strong knowledge of DSP concepts such as: modems, channelizers, Doppler compensation, resampling signal processing, adaptive filtering, and floating vs fixed point implementationsย
  • Strong knowledge of digital communications theory and systems including: spread spectrum, forward error correction, channel estimation, channel equalization, channel coding, and modulation types such as FSK, BPSK, QPSK, QAM, and PCM/FMย
  • Strong experience with signal detection topologies including: burst detection, digital up and down-conversion, IF signal processing, phase lock loops, costas loops, non-coherent detection, spreading and de-spreading algorithmsย
  • Strong experience in developing filter topologies including FIR filters, IIR filters, and trading between both implementationsย
  • Strong experience implementing transmitting and receiving topologies in GNU Radio in simulation-only environments as well as coupled with GNU Radio-compatible SDRsย
  • Strong experience with Python, MATLAB, and/or C/C++ย
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and high velocity start-up atmosphereย

Nice to Haveย

  • Experience with FPGA design, implementation, verification, and validation for RF applicationsย
  • Experience with signal intelligence (SIGINT), electronic warfare (EW), and satellite telecommunicationsย
  • Experience with channel emulators, and writing system-level simulations that go beyond the DSP layerย
  • Experience with software defined radio hardware development including data converters (digital to analog and analog to digital converters), clock trees, and data converter interfacesย
  • Experience with coupled hardware and DSP algorithm design, specifically with respect to compensation and continuous monitoring of analog-front end characteristicsย

Compensation and Benefits:ย

  • Base salary range for this role is $200,000 - $270,000 + equity in the companyย
  • Salary will be based on several factors including, but not limited to: knowledge and skills, education, and experience levelย
  • Comprehensive benefits package including unlimited paid time off, medical/dental/vision coverage, life insurance, paid parental leave, and many other perksย
