Job description

Rockstar is recruiting for a mission-driven startup that builds modern technology for the aging and disability services sector. They are a women-founded, venture-backed company tackling the $100B+ social services market to enable the delivery of life-sustaining services for older adults and people with disabilities. The company's customers are large public agencies across the country who coordinate complex networks of care, but who are currently wasting 60% of their time on administrative paperwork that can be digitized and automated. Their cloud-based solutions allow these agencies to streamline workflow, increase capacity to serve more people, and track outcomes. They have raised over $15M in capital and are backed by leading VCs in healthcare and SaaS.
About the Role
As a Senior Engineer at the company, you're responsible for designing, building, testing, and maintaining the core software our customers rely on every day. You'll take high command of a defined area of the codebase - and work closely with product managers and a team of 1-3 junior engineers to ship the projects that move our public-agency customers forward.
The stack is Ruby on Rails, Bootstrap, Stimulus, and Postgres. Expect to write code, review code, design data models, and mentor the people around you in roughly equal measure.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Experienced coding skill: Take high command of a defined area of the codebase, shipping production-grade Rails features end to end. Comfortable with the stack (Rails, Bootstrap, Stimulus, Postgres) or a close analog like Django.
  • Develop people: Support and grow a team of 1-3 junior engineers, partnering with product managers to complete projects and develop talent in parallel.
  • Startup agility and initiative: Operate inside a small, scrappy team that punches above its weight - get stuff done, figure things out, and marshal the resources you need to hit the goal.
  • Engineering quality: Apply refactoring, careful data design, and disciplined testing (the team maintains a 1.4:1 test-to-code ratio) to keep the codebase healthy as it grows.
  • AI-assisted development: Use tools like Claude Code or Codex fluently as a force multiplier on already strong development practices, and know when to reach for which model.
About You
  • 3-5+ years of experience: You've excelled as a mid-level engineer at a fast-growing technology company.
  • Rails + Postgres fluency: Solid working experience with most of: Ruby on Rails, Stimulus, JavaScript, Bootstrap, CSS3, Hotwire/Turbo, RSpec, ViewComponent, SQL/Postgres, Git, and SQL reporting tools.
  • Strong engineering practices: Track record of thoughtful refactoring, careful data design, and disciplined testing.
  • Creative problem-solver: Enjoy evaluating and incorporating third-party software and APIs to move faster without cutting corners.
  • AI dev tool fluency: Strong hands-on experience with Claude Code, Codex, or similar - and enough familiarity with the underlying models to know when each one earns its keep.
  • Agile-comfortable: Familiar and at home with Agile methodologies.
  • Bonus: Experience with Terraform, AWS, and/or Google Cloud; building HIPAA-regulated products with PHI; multi-tenant SaaS architecture.
Our Culture
The company values high performance and high enjoyment. In addition to having the privilege of working hard on a mission they believe in, the team gets to do it with people they genuinely respect and like being around. The hybrid/remote company of ~40 gets together in person 2x per year for team-proposed activities like board games, cooking competitions, and time in nature. In between those retreats, the team makes time for 1-1 connections across the company. They have a flat hierarchy: ideas for innovation that come from interns make it into the hands of users. Founded by two women of color, the company knows diversity in the team leads to higher quality decisions, so they continually invest in recruiting from under-represented groups and maintaining an inclusive environment.
Benefits
The expected salary range for this position is between $130,000 and $180,000. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
  • Health insurance, 15 days PTO (20 days after year two), and sick leave
  • 401K, disability insurance, FSA, and HSA
  • Generous paid family leave
  • The opportunity to do work that matters with a team that treats one another with respect and kindness
