Internship Rendering Engineer information

What are Internship Rendering Engineers?

Internship Rendering Engineers are students or recent graduates who work temporarily with a company, usually in the gaming, animation, or software industry, to help develop and optimize computer graphics rendering systems. They assist experienced engineers with tasks such as writing shader code, improving visual effects, and enhancing graphics performance. These internships offer hands-on experience with rendering engines, graphics APIs, and the latest visual technologies, providing valuable industry exposure and skill development.

What types of projects and technologies can an Internship Rendering Engineer expect to work on during their internship?

As an Internship Rendering Engineer, you'll typically work on projects involving real-time rendering, shader development, and graphics optimization for games or visualization applications. You might use technologies such as DirectX, OpenGL, Vulkan, or proprietary game engines, collaborating closely with artists and senior engineers to implement visual effects and ensure high performance. Interns often contribute to debugging graphical issues, optimizing rendering pipelines, and learning how rendering systems integrate with other parts of the software. This hands-on experience is invaluable for understanding both the technical and creative aspects of computer graphics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Rendering Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Rendering Engineer, you need a solid understanding of computer graphics fundamentals, C++ programming, and mathematics, often supported by coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with graphics APIs such as OpenGL, DirectX, or Vulkan, as well as experience with shader programming languages like GLSL or HLSL, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills are essential for developing efficient rendering solutions, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to visually compelling real-time graphics projects.

Job description

Waabi, founded by AI visionary Raquel Urtasun, is the leader in Physical AI. With a world-class team, we're unlocking the next era of autonomous transportation with technology that's powering commercial autonomous trucks and robotaxis. Waabi is backed by and partners with world leaders in AI, automotive, logistics, and deep tech.

With offices in Toronto, San Francisco, Dallas, and Pittsburgh, Waabi is growing quickly and looking for diverse, innovative and collaborative candidates who want to impact the world in a positive way. To learn more visit: www.waabi.ai

Waabiโ€™s autonomous-driving stack is powered by Waabi World, which aims to deliver realistic, scalable, controllable, and efficient simulation. As a Research Scientist in World Models, you will develop algorithms and productionize the next generation of World Models that can reason about complex, dynamic 4D environments.
This role focuses on large-scale world models for temporal reasoning and generation, including video models, multimodal generative models, LLM/VLM/VLA models, and predictive models of traffic participants and scenes. Your work will directly power Waabi Worldโ€™s ability to model future evolution, synthesize realistic safety-critical scenarios, and provide rich generative priors for downstream planning, testing, and training.
ย

You willโ€ฆ

- Conduct fundamental and applied research in generative and predictive world-modeling

โ€ข Video generation and prediction.

โ€ข Latent diffusion / autoregressive / flow-matching models.

โ€ข Multimodal foundation models for driving scenes.

โ€ข LLM / VLM / VLA methods for scene understanding, reasoning, and control.

โ€ข Generative scenario modeling and controllable simulation.

โ€ข Model distillation.

- Collaborate with engineers to integrate models into large-scale, distributed training and rendering pipelines.

- Publish high-impact research at top conferences (CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, NeurIPS, ICLR, ICRA, SIGGRAPH).

- Mentor junior scientists and interns; foster a culture of scientific rigor and rapid experimentation.

- Stay on top of emerging advances in generative AI, differentiable rendering, knowledge distillation/compression, and robotics.

Qualifications:

- Demonstrated technical innovation:ย  You have a Ph.D. in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related field or equivalent research experience pushing the boundaries of a technical field..

- Strong prototyping and implementation:ย  You have expert-level Python & PyTorch (or JAX) skills; strong software-engineering fundamentals and experience with distributed training.

- Expert domain knowledge: You have builtย  generative or predictive models of the physical world with scale and efficiency in mind for real-world applications

- Team player:ย  You have worked in a close-knit team of researchers and engineers and have strong communicationย  to deliver successful projects.ย

ย

Bonus:

- Proven ability to translate research into production-quality code and measurable product impact.

- Demonstrated publications (first-author) in top-tier venues on topics such as world models, generative simulation, video prediction, diffusion, flow-matching, or foundation models for autonomy.
