Job Description Summary
Performs phlebotomy and accessioning functions and non-technical duties in areas including the hospital laboratory, outpatient and off-site services.
Job Description
Minimum Requirements
  • Equivalent of four years of high school education preferred;
  • One year of full time experience preferred;
  • Certification eligible with a National Phlebotomy Association preferred;
  • Proficient in LIS Accessioning and Reference Laboratory Send-outs

Responsibilities:
  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick, and bleeding time) according to established procedure;
  • Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes;
  • Determines priority of STAT draws. Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to lab for testing;
  • Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions;
  • Organizes assigned work and accurately completes work load statistics;
  • Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments when needed to ensure an orderly work flow;
  • Under supervision will help in the training of new employees and student interns at the hospital in the performance of phlebotomy duties;
  • Follows all organizational and department or unit policies and procedures;
  • Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards;
  • Responsibly follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens;
  • Readily accepts changes in assignment. Performs work level of equal skill and responsibility as needed. May also perform work of a higher level in preparation for increased responsibility, and may be required to do work of lesser responsibilty when the workload of the department so requires;
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment;
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives;
  • Will act as a receptionist, greet patients, and answer phones in the outpatient lab when required;
  • Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department;
  • Records daily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas;
  • Organizes assigned work and accurately completes workload;
  • Performance of electrocardiograms.
