We are seeking Shanghainese (Wu Chinese) Over-the-Phone Interpreters (OPI) to support our USCIS contract. Shanghainese is a rare Chinese dialect, distinct from Mandarin and Cantonese, often required for asylum, immigration, and refugee interviews.
Responsibilities
  • Provide real-time Shanghainese ↔ English telephonic interpretation for USCIS interviews, hearings, and official proceedings.
  • Interpret accurately, neutrally, and professionally in immigration, legal, and administrative contexts.
  • Maintain confidentiality in line with USCIS/DHS interpreter standards.
  • Handle both scheduled assignments and urgent/surge interpretation requests.
  • Participate in training, compliance refreshers, and QA audits.
Qualifications
  • Native or near-native fluency in Shanghainese (Wu Chinese) and English.
  • 2+ years of professional interpreting experience (immigration, legal, community, or government preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of interpreter ethics, confidentiality, and cultural awareness.
