Job description

Summary:
In this role, the Production Engineering Intern supports the development, improvement, and documentation of manufacturing processes used in the production of FuelCell Energy components. Working under the guidance of Production Engineers and Engineering Technicians, the intern assists with process trials, data collection, equipment support activities, and workflow documentation. This internship provides handson exposure to fuel cell manufacturing while contributing to safety, quality, and productivity improvements across the Value Stream Team.


Essential Functions / Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with the preparation, execution, and documentation of engineering trials on the production floor, including data collection, measurement activities, and observation logging.
  2. Support continuous improvement initiatives by updating work instructions, creating visual aids, and documenting workflow or equipment changes.
  3. Help review engineering drawings, specifications, and process documents as part of product or equipment updates.
  4. Conduct basic data analysis in Excel and other tools to identify trends or support rootcause investigations.
  5. Assist technicians and engineers in equipment setup, preventative maintenance observations, or simple adjustments as appropriate for an intern role.
  6. Participate in valuestream mapping exercises, time studies, and ergonomics reviews to identify improvement opportunities.
  7. Support crossfunctional collaboration with Quality, R&D, Production Development, Facilities, and Environmental Health and Safety.
  8. Capture photos, notes, and redlines during prototype builds, teardown reviews, or process development activities.
  9. Follow all required safety procedures and contribute to maintaining a clean and organized workspace.

Internship Intent/Exposure:

This internship aims to expose students to Manufacturing and Production Engineering while cultivating their practical engineering skills through handson support of the Production Engineering team.ย  Depending on the projects the students are involved in and their interests, they may be exposed to the following:

  • Automated equipment troubleshooting including 6-axis robots, lasers, furnaces, dispensing equipment, presses, vibratory equipment, etc.
  • Statistical Analysis (Minitab)
  • Blueprint Reading
  • CAD (Solidworks)
  • CAM (Solidworks CAM)
  • 3D Printing (Prusa)

Qualifications and Experience:

Education:

Actively enrolled in a bachelor's program in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.ย  Candidates must have completed all sophomorelevel coursework prior to the start of employment; completion of juniorlevel coursework is preferred.

Experience:

No professional experience required. Prior internship, laboratory work, or handson technical coursework is preferred.

Desired Skills and Characteristics:

  • Interest in manufacturing, process engineering, and handson technical work.
  • Ability to organize tasks, follow instructions, and document work clearly.
  • Strong analytical mindset and willingness to learn.
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings or basic measurement tools is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a crossfunctional team.
