Staff Psychologist - Clinical Resource Hub

The Veterans Health Administration is seeking a Staff Psychologist for the VISN 20 Clinical Resource Hub Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program Team. This position supports VA facilities within VISN 20 by providing behavioral health services to Veterans and families, including psychosocial assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, counseling, case management, discharge planning, consultation, and coordination with VA and community resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide psychological and behavioral health services to Veterans and families with complex medical, psychiatric, emotional, behavioral, and psychosocial concerns.
  • Establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with Veterans and their families.
  • Complete thorough psychosocial assessments to determine functioning, needs, treatment goals, and support requirements.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning with Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselors, nurses, peer support specialists, administrative support staff, and other team members.
  • Apply knowledge of mental health and substance abuse diagnoses and treatment procedures, including acute, chronic, and traumatic conditions.
  • Facilitate discharge planning in collaboration with Veterans, families, and interdisciplinary treatment team members.
  • Serve as a liaison between Veterans, families, VA programs, and community resources.
  • Independently implement treatment modalities and provide counseling and/or supportive groups for Veterans and families.
  • Provide consultation and education to Veterans and families regarding community resources, VA benefits, specialty programs, and advance directives.
  • Consult with treatment team members and staff regarding psychosocial needs and their impact on health care planning, treatment compliance, and discharge planning.
  • Provide case management services to Veterans and families throughout the continuum of care.
  • Assist Veterans in coping with disability, terminal illness, loss, grief, and related life-span issues.
  • Communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, both orally and in writing.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must be subject to a background/security investigation.
  • Must complete all application requirements and online onboarding requirements.
  • Must participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program as required for Department of Veterans Affairs health care personnel.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Must be subject to urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment because this is a testing designated position.
  • May be required to serve a one-year or two-year trial period.

Education, Internship, and Licensure Requirements:

  • Must have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program accredited by the American Psychological Association, Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System, or Canadian Psychological Association, with a specialty area consistent with the assignment.
  • Applicants may also qualify with a doctoral degree in psychology plus a qualifying APA- or CPA-accredited re-specialization program.
  • Applicants may qualify with a doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionally accredited institution with a dissertation primarily psychological in nature.
  • Must have completed a qualifying professional psychology internship program, unless an approved exception applies.
  • Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Non-licensed applicants who otherwise meet requirements may be appointed temporarily as graduate psychologists under supervision, but must obtain licensure within the required timeframe.

GS-11 Qualifications:

  • No additional experience is required beyond meeting the basic education, internship, licensure, and English proficiency requirements.

GS-12 Qualifications:

  • Must have at least one year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the GS-11 grade level.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply a wide range of professional psychological treatments or assessment methods to a variety of patient populations.
  • Must be able to design and implement effective treatment strategies.
  • Must be able to incorporate new clinical procedures.
  • Must be able to conduct or support clinical research activities when required by the assignment.
  • Must be able to perform basic research tasks within an established research team when applicable.

GS-13 Qualifications:

  • Must have at least two years of experience as a professional psychologist, including at least one year equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply professional psychological treatments to the full range of patient populations.
  • Must be able to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of clinical research literature.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in virtual care or tele-medicine.
  • Experience with Oracle Health EMR.

Additional Requirements:

  • Selected candidate must live within 50 miles of any VISN 20 VA facility.
  • Open to U.S. Citizens.
  • Veterans' Preference will not be applied to this occupation in accordance with the listed VHA staffing shortage determination.

  • Additional documents such as license, SF-50, cover letter, DD-214, SF-15, and other supporting documents may be required depending on eligibility and qualifications.
