Job description

General Purpose

Develops and maintains engineering specifications, technical standards, procurement requirements, performance assessments, inspections, and technical evaluations associated with power transformers, reactors, and phase shifters. Provides engineering support throughout the equipment lifecycle including specification development, procurement, manufacturing oversight, factory inspections, commissioning support, equipment performance review, and failure investigations. Progressively applies engineering expertise and technical leadership to ensure reliable, safe, and cost-effective utility operation.

This position is available at multiple levels.  Applicants will be considered for the level that best matches their education and experience. 

Responsibilities

Engineer I Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of transformer, reactor, and phase shifter specifications.
  • Review manufacturer drawings, technical data, and documentation under supervision.
  • Participate in factory inspections and witness testing activities.
  • Support equipment evaluations and technical studies.
  • Assist in failure investigations and data collection efforts.
  • Conduct engineering analyses and prepare technical reports.
  • Support commissioning and field troubleshooting activities.
  • Collaborate with project teams, manufacturers, and operations personnel.

Engineer II Additional Responsibilities

  • Independently review manufacturer submittals, drawings, and technical exceptions.
  • Develop and revise equipment specifications and procurement requirements.
  • Perform engineering studies and equipment performance evaluations.
  • Evaluate material substitutions and specification deviations.
  • Support factory inspections and factory acceptance testing activities.
  • Develop recommendations regarding equipment selection and procurement.
  • Coordinate technical activities with manufacturers, suppliers, and project teams.
  • Manage assigned work activities, schedules, and deliverables.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college/university.
  • Basic knowledge and application of principles in area of engineering 
  • Basic knowledge of utility power systems, engineering principles, and power transformer applications.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations (if required for the position).
  • Ability to interact favorably with project and work teams.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools. 

Engineer II Additional Requirements 

  • Two or more years of related engineering experience
  • Working knowledge of transformer applications, manufacturing, testing, and applicable IEEE C57 standards.
Preferences

Engineer I: EIT certification, power systems coursework, utility internship or co-op experience.


Engineer II: Progress toward PE licensure, exposure to factory acceptance testing (FAT) or commissioning activities.
