Job description

SUMMARY 

Mortenson is currently seeking a Senior Finance BI Developer that will support Finance reporting and analytics by engineering trusted, reusable datasets and semantic models in Microsoft Fabric/Power BI and delivering intuitive, business-ready reporting experiences. This role partners with Finance Leaders, data consumers and cross-functional data teams to translate business questions into governed metrics, performant models, and self-service visuals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to work and facilitate conversation in a cross-functional, collaborative, team-based environment
  • Visualization & Report Development (Power BI)
    • Design and build intuitive Power BI reports and dashboards that enable decision-making for Finance leaders and teams
    • Translate requirements into effective visuals, tooltips, drill paths, and narrative elements that communicate key drivers and exceptions
    • Apply visualization standards (layout, accessibility, consistent KPI definitions) and optimize report performance (model usage, interactions, visuals)
  • Analytics Engineering (Semantic Modeling & Data Shaping)
    • Design, build, and maintain Power BI/Fabric semantic models (star schemas, relationships, calculation groups as applicable) that enable consistent, trusted reporting
    • Engineer reusable DAX measures and KPI definitions; document metric logic and ensure alignment to Finance definitions and reporting standards
    • Build and maintain reliable data shaping pipelines (e.g., SQL, Power Query, Dataflows Gen2) and implement reconciliations/controls to validate completeness and accuracy
  • Platform Management & Optimization 
    • Manage and support Fabric/Power BI workspaces, semantic models, and refresh processes in coordination with BI platform administrators
    • Use established CI/CD practices (deployment pipelines, version control where available); contribute improvements to release and validation processes
    • Monitor and enhance model/report performance, refresh reliability, and scalability; troubleshoot issues and implement sustainable fixes
    • Implement and maintain appropriate security patterns (e.g., RLS/OLS), access controls, and governance-aligned practices for Finance reporting solutions
  • Collaboration & Support
    • Work closely with teams to understand reporting requirements
    • Provide training, documentation, and guidance to help users leverage data
    • Act as a trusted resource for ongoing reporting and analytics requests
    • Displays advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with initiative to seek and continue to learn innovative solutions
  • Strategic Initiatives
    • Contribute to long term BI and Data strategy
    • Identify automation opportunities and streamline manual reporting processes
    • Support special analytics projects, data quality initiatives, and modernization efforts
    • Stay up to date with Power BI features and industry best practices
  • Identify and maintain strong processes to consume and consolidate large amounts of data into centralized, sustainable, and repeatable measurements
  • Review finance data consistently and partner with cross functional teams to provide corrective action and long-term solutions when necessary 
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Toolset, best practices and general Data Operations best practices 
  • Track and report Data Quality and Data Governance KPIs for Finance
  • Provide peer support and knowledge sharing; may mentor junior analysts informally
  • Identify and implement strategic initiatives.
  • All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree and 3-5 years related experience; or, high school diploma or GED and 8+ years related experience

  • 3-6 years of professional experience delivering Power BI solutions, including semantic modeling and end-user reporting

  • Strong command of Power BI (Desktop/Service) and Microsoft Fabric concepts (semantic models, workspaces, refresh, security)

  • Advanced Experience with SQL Server, T-SQL, or database design

  • Advanced knowledge of DAX and Power Query (M)

  • Proven experience with dimensional modeling (star schemas), semantic model design, and performance tuning for self-service analytics

  • Ability to turn business questions into actionable BI solutions

  • Familiarity with Fabric/Azure data services (e.g., Lakehouse/Warehouse concepts, SQL endpoints, Azure SQL, Data Factory/Synapse as applicable)

  • Superior attention to detail and accuracy

  • Proven positive and professional attitude and strong customer service skills

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present data clearly

  • Ability to assess, prioritize, and manage multiple stakeholder needs while delivering high-quality work on time

  • Agile Product delivery, Sprint Planning Experience

  • (Nice to have) Knowledge of Python or R for analytics and data transformations

  • (Nice to have) Experience using Git or other version control systems

  • (Nice to have) Microsoft BI or data engineering Certifications

The base pay range for this role is $85,300 - $128,000. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL - 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR - 10%, Washington, D.C. - 12.5%).

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.  This position is eligible for Mortenson's incentive plan.
