Job description


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide engineering support for offshore cranes, winches, and equipment.
  • Conceptualize structural and mechanical design solutions.
  • Perform and/or supervise creation of design layouts.
  • Perform and/or supervise creation of detail drawings.
  • Perform tolerance studies and check design documentation.
  • Research and specify purchased parts, including hydraulic, electric drive, and gear components.
  • Create component and system level test plans and test fixtures.
  • Create engineering reports documenting calculations, design efforts, and results.
  • Work with operations to identify product improvements.
  • Perform other work related tasks as assigned.
  • Comply with all NOV Company and HSE policies and procedures.

FACILITY/GROUP SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide all required calculations and documentation for any checked and/or approved crane and winch designs.
  • Verify and check drawings and layouts.
  • Give direction to designers and drafters.
  • Provide all required calculations and documentation to approve and to meet the applicable structural codes, including but not limited to ABS, API, ASME, and AWS.
  • Provide technical liaison to Sr. Design, Principal, and Engineering Managers for sales, service, and operations in the office and field.
  • Provide engineering functions at lower and/or higher skill levels as schedules and workload dictate, and to expand skills under the direction of the Engineering Manager.
  • Ability to communicate effectively technical principles and equipment operation to other departments (i.e., operations, sales, parts, and to customer).
  • Develop application information for proposals on cranes, winches, and related product lines.
  • Support sales activities with technical information on mechanical equipment.
  • Support parts operation by generating substitutions and/or improved systems when required within economic limits.
  • Comply with and perform Quality Management System (QMS) requirements.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum Bachelor's of Science (four year degree) from ABET accredited engineering program.
  • Five year work experience.
  • Two to five years work experience in designing components, machinery, lifting equipment, winches, or similar systems.
  • Relevant use of engineering CAD software; Inventor preferred.
  • Relevant use of Finite Element Analysis software.
  • Relevant crane (lifting appliance), offshore/marine, hydraulic, electric drive, or gear design experience preferred.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Perform the creation of 3D models with AutoCAD-Inventor software.
  • Perform the creation of design layouts for crane, winch, and machinery assemblies.
  • Perform and/or supervise creation of detail drawings for weldments, machined parts, gear components, and assemblies.
  • Provide engineering support as required on produced equipment.
  • Conceptualize mechanical solutions.
  • Perform hydraulic system design, including power requirements and component selection.
  • Perform power system calculations for lifting appliances
  • Proficiency in technical English terminology to prepare written reports.
  • Ability to travel to customer and/or vendor sites. (<10% travel)

  • AutoCad Inventor competency preferred.
  • Ansys competency preferred.
  • Siemens Teamcenter competency preferred.
