What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Nutritionist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Nutritionist, you need foundational knowledge in nutritional science, dietary planning, and a relevant academic background, usually in nutrition or dietetics. Familiarity with dietary analysis software, food labeling regulations, and possibly the use of electronic health record systems is important. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set standout candidates apart when educating clients and collaborating with healthcare teams. These skills ensure accurate nutritional guidance, client engagement, and effective teamwork within clinical or community settings.

What types of projects or responsibilities can I expect as an Internship Nutritionist?

As an Internship Nutritionist, you are likely to assist with a variety of tasks such as conducting dietary assessments, helping to develop nutrition education materials, and supporting client consultations under supervision. You may also participate in community outreach programs, data collection for research projects, and meal planning activities. Collaboration with registered dietitians, healthcare teams, and sometimes food service staff is common, providing you with valuable exposure to different aspects of the nutrition field. This hands-on experience is designed to build your practical knowledge while enhancing your teamwork and communication skills.

What does an internship nutritionist do?

An internship nutritionist is typically a student or recent graduate who is gaining practical experience in the field of nutrition and dietetics. They work under the supervision of licensed nutritionists or dietitians to assist with nutrition assessments, meal planning, client counseling, and community nutrition programs. The internship allows them to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings and is often a requirement for certification or licensure. Tasks may also include collecting data, conducting research, and helping with educational workshops. The experience helps them develop the skills necessary to become a registered dietitian or nutritionist.

Job description

We save lives while providing the opportunity for people to realize their healthy selves.:
Registered Dietitian / Dietitian Eligible for Registration & LicensureMonte Nido Eating Disorder Center of Portland
Portland, Oregon

Monte Nido Eating Disorder Center of Portland is a premier eating disorder day treatment program serving adults seeking treatment for Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Exercise Addiction, and related eating disorders. Through our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), clients receive comprehensive care from an interdisciplinary team of clinical, medical, psychiatric, and nutrition professionals.

We are seeking a Registration/Licensure-Eligible Dietitian to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates, dietetic interns who have completed accredited programs, and early-career nutrition professionals who are eligible to sit for the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) exam and obtain state licensure.

As a key member of our multidisciplinary treatment team, the Dietitian collaborates closely with therapists, physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide exceptional nutrition care and support clients throughout their recovery journey.

What You'll Do
  • Provide individualized nutrition assessment, counseling, meal planning, and education.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary treatment teams to support client recovery goals.
  • Facilitate nutrition groups and meal support experiences.
  • Monitor client progress and adjust nutrition interventions as needed.
  • Participate in treatment planning, case consultations, and family support when appropriate.
  • Promote a positive, recovery-oriented relationship with food and body image.
Our Nutrition Philosophy

Our HAES®-informed approach to nutritional care emphasizes:

  • Recognition that healthy, recovered people come in all shapes and sizes.
  • Respect for body diversity and the belief that all bodies deserve nourishment and satiety.
  • Behavior-focused rather than weight-focused treatment philosophies.
  • Understanding that intentional weight loss efforts are often contraindicated in eating disorder recovery.
  • Supportive, homelike food environments that encourage healing and self-trust.

Nutrition programming across all Monte Nido programs is grounded in the principles of health, recovery, freedom from eating disorder behaviors, and developmentally appropriate progression toward internally directed eating.

Schedule

Monday – Friday

Compensation

$69,000 – $93,000 annually (dependdent on experience)

Why Join Monte Nido?
  • Work alongside leaders in eating disorder treatment.
  • Comprehensive training and professional development opportunities.
  • Collaborative, mission-driven culture.
  • Opportunity to make a meaningful impact in clients' recovery journeys.
  • Ideal role for both experienced dietitians and newly credentialed professionals beginning their careers in eating disorder treatment.
