Job description

POSITION TITLE: Nutrition Education Specialist
I. JOB SUMMARY
The primary objective of this position is to provide evidence-based nutrition education focused on obesity prevention, disease prevention, and disease management across the six-county service area (Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Madison, Robertson & Washington Counties) of the Brazos Valley Food Bank (BVFB). The Nutrition Education Specialist works to foster partnerships with BVFB partner agencies, programs, and community organizations as needed to offer nutrition services to staff, volunteers, and clients. The Nutrition Education Specialist is supervised by the Nutrition Education Coordinator to develop relevant nutrition resources and strategies for partner agencies and populations served by BVFB. This position is a full-time position.
Salary Range:
$17.67-20.19/hour
II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Direct Nutrition Education Delivery & Facilitation (20%)
  • Delivers nutrition education classes, strategies, and materials to SNAP-eligible/low-income sites and participants.
  • Fosters an inclusive, safe, and engaging learning environment for volunteers and class participants.
2. Class Preparation & Program Operations (30%)
  • Completes all necessary preparations for class, including grocery shopping, assembling class materials, and transporting groceries and/or equipment.
  • Performs post-class responsibilities, including cleanup, returning equipment, washing dishes, organizing, and filing supplemental materials.
  • Maintains program storage areas and monitors nutrition education supply inventory.
3. Data & Reporting (15%)
  • Submits accurate closed-class data and evaluation results by assigned deadlines to the Nutrition Education Coordinator (NEC).
  • Enters required data into BVFB-designated data entry software.
  • Submits required class and program reports.
  • Demonstrates the ability to stay on task and fulfill Nutrition Education Program requirements.
4. Outreach (5%)
  • Markets BVFB's Nutrition Education Program to partner agencies, programs, and community organizations through phone calls, email correspondence, handouts, one-to-one scheduled visits, and other communication channels.
  • Assist the NEC in identifying potential SNAP-eligible/low-income sites.
  • Fosters relationships with SNAP/low-income eligible sites (e.g., schools, senior feeding sites) to expand nutrition services that promote healthy eating and physical activity.
5. Curriculum & Content Development (25%)
  • Assists the NEC with revising nutrition education curriculum, evaluations (pre- and post-tests), and class materials to meet client needs and program requirements.
  • Develops additional nutrition education materials, including cooking demonstration templates, recipes, tip sheets, social media posts, and video content.
6. Volunteer & Intern Support (5%)
  • Assists the NEC in mentoring and supporting nutrition education volunteers, mentees, and dietetic interns.
  • Ensures effective engagement, training, and adherence to program standards.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the supervisor in support of the goals of BVFB.

III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education, Experience, and Training
  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). A degree in Nutrition, Health Education, Public Health, or a related field is preferred; candidates with experience in Education or other teaching fields may also be considered.
  • At least one year of experience in community nutrition, nutrition education, or classroom instruction preferred; equivalent experience in teaching, health promotion, or community engagement may be considered.
B. Knowledge and Skills
  • Bilingual in Spanish, preferred.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. In particular, the ability to understand and organize detailed information and to write about or talk extemporaneously about that information.
  • Knowledge of nutrition, food, and food safety.
  • Experience in teaching or facilitating groups, including classroom management and engagement of participants across all age ranges, from children to seniors, in community nutrition or health education settings.
  • Ability to work cooperatively under pressure with a diverse range of people and to communicate tactfully with all members of the community.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail and accuracy while adhering to deadlines in a high-energy, fast-paced environment.
  • Exercises good judgment and discretion; demonstrates strong ethical character and ability to handle confidential information.
  • Proficiency in Canva, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to be flexible with working hours to meet the client and class schedule (includes evenings and weekends)
  • Ability to work effectively with other Food Bank staff and volunteers
  • Ability to obtain certification in Food Handling.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check
  • Current driver's license and ability to use personal vehicle for BVFB business (mileage reimbursement for work travel)
IV. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS WITH OR WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry up to 25 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.
  • Conditions may include working inside, working outside, working alone, working protracted or irregular hours, and traveling by car, van, bus, and airplane.
  • Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing only the essential functions include computer and related equipment, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, and automobile.
