What is an internship nurse?

Internship nursing positions are temporary roles designed for nursing students or recent graduates to gain hands-on clinical experience under the supervision of licensed nurses. These internships help bridge the gap between academic education and professional practice, allowing interns to apply theoretical knowledge in real healthcare settings. Nursing interns typically assist with patient care, observe procedures, and learn essential skills crucial for their future careers. The experience helps build confidence, develop professional relationships, and often increases employability after graduation.

What types of clinical rotations can I expect during a nursing internship, and how do they contribute to my professional development?

During a nursing internship, you will typically rotate through various hospital departments such as medical-surgical units, pediatrics, emergency, and intensive care. Each rotation exposes you to different patient populations, workflows, and clinical challenges, helping you build a well-rounded skill set. These experiences allow you to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, enhance your critical thinking, and develop effective communication with patients and healthcare teams. Successful completion of diverse rotations not only boosts your confidence but also provides valuable networking opportunities and a clearer understanding of your preferred nursing specialties.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Nurse, you need foundational knowledge of nursing principles, basic patient care, and current enrollment in or completion of a nursing program. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), patient monitoring tools, and common clinical procedures is typical. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and adaptability help interns integrate effectively with healthcare teams and respond to patient needs. These competencies ensure safe, high-quality patient care and foster professional growth during the transition from student to practicing nurse.

Internship Nursing involves nursing students gaining practical experience during their education, often in supervised clinical settings. Nursing Assistants provide direct patient care under supervision, typically with less formal education. Both roles are essential in healthcare, but Internship Nursing is a training phase, while Nursing Assistants are employed to perform routine care tasks.

What internships can nursing students do?

Nursing students can pursue internships such as clinical rotations, summer programs, or externships in hospitals, clinics, or community health settings. These internships provide hands-on experience, skill development, and exposure to patient care, often requiring CPR certification and adherence to healthcare regulations.

What qualifications are needed for an internship nursing?

To qualify for a nursing internship, candidates typically need to be enrolled in or have recently completed a nursing program and hold or be eligible for a nursing license or certification. Strong communication skills, basic clinical knowledge, and the ability to work in a healthcare environment are also important. Some internships may require a minimum GPA or specific coursework completion.

Job description

Description:

OUR MISSION

Wellness Equity Alliance is a national multidisciplinary health organization that designs and delivers integrated, community-based care for populations most impacted by health inequities. We do this through mobile and field-based models, providing medical care, behavioral health services, substance use treatment, harm reduction, and care coordination in nontraditional settings such as encampments, schools, reentry sites, and rural communities as well as with sovereign tribal nations. Grounded in trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and data-driven practices, WEA combines clinical expertise, lived experience, and advanced population health analytics to reduce barriers to care, improve continuity, and strengthen local systems. We have partnered with more than 60 public agencies, managed care plans, and community-based organizations across the U.S. to implement scalable, sustainable programs that are advancing health equity and improving outcomes for historically marginalized populations.

We are known as Renegades, Rebels, Disruptors and Dreamers. If that sounds like you, we want you on our team.

Position Overview

The Graduate Internship Coordinator serves as the organizational hub for all graduate-level internship and field placement activities, managing relationships with students, academic institutions, and internal supervisors across a diverse portfolio of graduate degree programs. This role requires a dynamic, detail-oriented professional who is passionate about mentorship, workforce development, and the mission of advancing public health and health equity. The Coordinator ensures that every intern — regardless of discipline — receives a meaningful, structured, and academically aligned experience that advances both their professional development and the organization's strategic goals.

Key Highlights

  • Compensation: The compensation range for this role is $27.88 - $36.06 per hour, with final compensation determined based on experience, qualifications, and role scope.
  • Work Location & Schedule Expectations: Preference will be given to candidates who are available for regular in-person engagement at one of our Southern California locations. This is a part-time position with a flexible schedule of up to 24 hours per week, based on organizational needs.
  • Professional Development: Opportunity to collaborate with cross-functional leaders across Behavioral Health, Medical, Street Medicine, Public Health, Rural Health, and Tribal Health initiatives.
