What does an Internship Membrane Scientist do?

An Internship Membrane Scientist assists in research and development related to membrane technologies, such as those used for filtration, water treatment, or energy applications. Their tasks often include conducting experiments, analyzing data, preparing samples, and collaborating with senior scientists. Interns in this field gain hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and learn about the fabrication, characterization, and testing of membrane materials. This position is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in materials science, chemical engineering, or environmental science.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Membrane Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Membrane Scientist, you need a solid background in chemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering, often supported by relevant academic coursework or laboratory experience. Familiarity with analytical tools such as SEM, FTIR, and membrane performance testing equipment, as well as data analysis software, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork make interns stand out in research environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing to innovative research, ensuring accurate experimental results, and collaborating effectively within scientific teams.

What is the difference between Internship Membrane Scientist vs Research Associate in Membrane Technology?

AspectInternship Membrane ScientistResearch Associate in Membrane Technology
QualificationsUndergraduate or graduate student, basic knowledge of membrane scienceBachelor's or Master's degree in chemical engineering, materials science, or related field
Work EnvironmentLaboratory, research facilities, internship settingResearch labs, academic or industrial research centers
Job FocusAssisting with experiments, data collection, learning membrane processesDesigning experiments, analyzing data, developing membrane applications

The Internship Membrane Scientist typically is a student gaining hands-on experience, while the Research Associate in Membrane Technology is a more experienced role focused on conducting independent research. Both roles involve working in laboratory settings and require knowledge of membrane science, but the level of responsibility and qualifications differ.

What types of projects and research activities can an Internship Membrane Scientist expect to be involved in?

As an Internship Membrane Scientist, you can expect to participate in hands-on laboratory research focused on the development, fabrication, and testing of membrane materials for applications such as water purification, gas separation, or energy storage. You may assist in conducting experiments, analyzing membrane performance data, and collaborating with senior scientists or engineers to troubleshoot and optimize membrane processes. Interns often have the opportunity to present findings in team meetings, contribute to technical reports, and learn about industry-standard equipment and analytical techniques. This role offers valuable exposure to both independent and collaborative research within a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.

Job description

FC Renew, LLC, is an early-stage deep tech development company enabling the hydrogen transition and accelerating electrification of essential hardware and systems for defense and commercial use. Our core technology is a life-extension renewal process for proton exchange membrane hydrogen fuel cells for transportation applications that extends their lifetimes by 6x while creating a 5.3x reduction in total cost of ownership. Our research and development is currently supported and funded by the U.S. Army, U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and LaunchTN.

We are seeking a Senior Research Scientist to join our fast-paced team at our main research laboratory at the Spark Innovation Center of the University of Tennessee's Cherokee Farms Campus (Knoxville, TN) with occasional laboratory work at various laboratories within Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Oak Ridge, TN) which is about 15-30 minutes away.

The Senior Research Scientist will have a hybrid role involving laboratory work and management, overseeing and leading other laboratory researchers and technicians. This position reports directly to the CEO. Our research and development are currently supported and funded by the U.S. Army, U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and LaunchTN.

The ideal candidate will have an expert background in at least one of the following areas: electrochemistry, hydrogen fuel cell testing, hydrogen fuel cell catalyst synthesis and analysis, electroplating, colloidal systems, heterogenous electrocatalysts, and/or surface science and modification techniques.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

The Senior Research Scientist should expect to plan, lead, and execute laboratory efforts of relevant projects surrounding hydrogen fuel cells, electrolyzers, and reversible fuel cells. The Senior Research Scientist will work on research, design, prototyping, test, and characterization of cutting-edge hardware. The work will involve:

  • Developing skills and overseeing the work of other laboratory technicians, researchers, and paid student interns
  • Performing electrochemical diagnostics and end-of-life analysis to characterize polarization behavior, transport resistances, electrochemical surface area, and kinetic activities
  • Operating analytical equipment such as Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
  • Supporting and executing research and product development projects hydrogen fuel cells
  • Developing and integrating new products, procedures and/or prototypes
  • Implementing and managing tests to characterize components, processes and fuel cell performances and support troubleshooting efforts in test stands.
