Job description

Job Title:
Mechanical Engineering Technician
Reports To:
Senior Engineer
Department:
MAGNET prototyping and engineering lab
FLSA Status:
Non-Exempt
Create the future
MAGNET is driving Northeast Ohio manufacturing growth by supporting small and mid-sized manufacturers and startups. Our Engineering team is looking for a talented team member to develop and support new product development, prototyping and engineering.
The role
We are looking for a motivated, "hands-on" Mechanical Engineering Technician to join our design and prototype production team. This isnโ€™t a "desk-only" job, you will be taking projects from the screen to prototype and manufacturing. You will be supporting the engineering team to produce prototypes and equipment for MAGNET clients. Youโ€™ll be responsible for designing components, rapid prototyping with 3D printers, and getting your hands dirty in the machine shop to bring your designs to life. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who doesn't wait for a manual and loves solving puzzles. You like to learn new things. You are also comfortable demonstrating and explaining engineering to clients and students.
  • Design amp; Modeling: Develop design concepts from sketches through SolidWorks or CREO to create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and 2D technical drawings.
  • Prototyping: Operate and maintain 3D printers to quickly iterate designs and test form/fit.
  • Manual Fabrication: Perform basic machining (mill, lathe, drill press) and hand-tool work to build functional prototypes or custom fixtures. Identify areas in which tooling, cleanliness, or operation sequences can be improved to increase throughput or product quality.
  • Problem Solving: Troubleshoot mechanical failures; identify and implement creative hardware solutions.
  • Documentation: Maintain clear design, project logs and assembly instructions for your designs.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain engineering prototype equipment and student equipment demonstration spaces throughout the building.
  • Tours: Occasionally give tours and explain how the equipment works from an engineering perspective to students.
Education Requirements
  • Minimum requirement - 2-yr Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Technologies or equivalent experience
  • 4-yr mechanical engineering also considered
Required Experience
  • CAD Proficiency: Hands-on experience with SolidWorks or CREO (internship or academic project experience is perfectly fine).
  • Technical Skills: Basic understanding of machining and the fundamentals of 3D printing (Slicing, material selection, etc.). Able to execute basic capabilities of machining.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Manufacturing Experience Preferred: Operating machines such as CNC, lathe, mechanical machine maintenance, tool room, welding.
Critical Traits
  • Drive: Must be self-motivated and a "Team Player" with good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: You enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together. You are comfortable around a shop environment.
  • Problem Solving: You look at something not functioning as a challenge and can think of creative solutions
  • Time Management: Must be able to organize time and assignments to properly prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness.
Details:
  • Full-time, normal business hours
  • Onsite at MAGNET Cleveland
Compensation:
  • Annual salary of $45,000 - $70,000
This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the region while working with a dynamic and creative group of professionals. MAGNET provides an outstanding benefits package including excellent medical/dental/vision insurance, retirement plan, and generous time-off benefits. MAGNET is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer/M/F/D/V.
