Job description

VCA Palm Beach Veterinary Specialists is one of southeast Florida's largest multispecialty and emergency hospitals. The hospital was established in 1998 as a surgery-only facility and the only referral practice in Palm Beach County. Our hospital quickly grew into what it is now, a state-of-the-art hospital housed in a beautiful, new 34,000 sq. ft. building, which has previously won the veterinary hospital of the year award.
The internship program is supported by 2 board-certified veterinary surgeons and 1 board-certified veterinary neurosurgeon with diverse backgrounds and areas of interest, which will expose our surgical interns to a variety of different surgical techniques and clinical approaches. Departments in our facility include surgery, internal medicine, radiation therapy, neurology, canine rehabilitation therapy, and emergency and critical care. Our doctors are supported by over 80 support staff. We have a well-trained and compassionate nursing team, assistants, and advanced imaging technicians to support clinicians with patient care.
Our facility boasts in-house and national reference laboratory services, blood bank, ultrasonography, endoscopy, a 1.5T MRI, and a brand new 64-slice CT scan. We also have a new Halcyon linear accelerator and a 4K arthroscopic tower with near-infrared capability.
Our advanced hospital design, combined with our specialty service capability, brings a level of medical sophistication to our practice that is unique in South Florida. In addition, the facility is also home to the Palm Coast Education Center, which includes a 125-seat auditorium, conference room, and meeting/banquet hall used for continuing education programs for veterinarians and paraprofessionals.
The internship is open to candidates who have completed a 1-year rotating internship, 3 years of general practice, or a prior surgical internship, and is intended for candidates who plan to pursue a surgical residency. The intern's time will be divided between three operating clinicians (two surgeons and a neurologist). The focus of the internship is to develop a strong candidate for residency. We will support the intern to complete a publication submitted to a reputable journal by VIRMP MATCH date, although this is not a requirement of our program.
There will be active didactic rounds on a weekly basis, including journal club, Tobias and Johnson book rounds, soft tissue and orthopedic case rounds.
At the conclusion of the internship, the candidate will be proficient in surgical planning, surgical approaches and closures, literature interpretation, manuscript preparation, boards preparation, client communication, and patient care. The candidate will have the opportunity to apply for a VCA-sponsored residency at an academic institution. Time off will be provided for residency interviews. For more information on our surgical internship, please contact us as we are very excited to meet you and discuss this opportunity.
