Job description


The CAD/Modeling TechIntern will work Hoffman Layout and Modeling and report to the VDC Team. This internship provides students with hands-on experience supporting Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) and reality capture initiatives on projects. The intern will work closely with VDC team members and field personnel to use industry-leading technologies and workflows related to laser scanning, point cloud processing, BIM, and 3D modeling. This position is in-person and will support job site teams while providing opportunities for professional growth and practical application of classroom learning.
Salary range: $24.16 - $30.29 per hour (plus assignment adjustment, if applicable)
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Receive, process, and archive point cloud files from field project team members.
  • Compile, register and publish point cloud data using Leica Register 360.
  • Interpret point clouds, construction documents, and other survey data sources to create accurate 2D and 3D maps and models using Revit, Civil 3D, and Cyclone software.
  • Verify point cloud and model accuracy to survey control.
  • Create conceptual models, photorealistic renders, fly-throughs, and other material to assist in marketing ventures.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Position Related Skills
  • Assist with receiving, organizing, processing, and archiving point cloud files from field project team members.
  • Support the compilation, registration, and publishing of point cloud data using Leica Register 360 and other reality capture software.
  • Assist in interpreting point clouds, construction documents, and survey data to develop 2D and 3D maps and models using Revit, Civil 3D, Cyclone, and related software.
  • Participate in quality control reviews to verify point cloud and model accuracy against survey control.
  • Assist in creating conceptual models, visualizations, photorealistic renderings, fly-throughs, and other materials to support project and marketing initiatives.
  • Collaborate with VDC team members on project deliverables while developing technical and professional skills.

Professional Experience and Education
  • Currently pursuing an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Surveying or Geomatics, or a related field.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position in an office environment more than 50% of the time, with the occasional requirement to move about the construction site.
  • Must be able to access work being done on multiple levels.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machines, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Occasionally uses machinery and other tools to operate, activate, use, prepare, inspect, place, detect, and position materials.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus in an outdoor environment. Must be able to; visually inspect work, look for small defects, and small parts, and/or operate machines (including inspection); use measurement devices; and/or assemble or fabricate parts. Must be able to safely operate a vehicle with a valid driver's license. The worker is required to have the ability to perform duties such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; reading printed and digital documents.
  • Must be able to occasionally work in proximity to loud equipment. Must be able to wear hearing protection as necessary. Often required to communicate with customers and coworkers in an office setting and, on the phone/digital meetings.
  • Mental alertness, accuracy and attention to detail required.
