What is an internship in human centered design?

An Internship in Human Centered Design is a temporary position where students or recent graduates work alongside professionals to learn about designing products, services, or systems that prioritize the needs and experiences of users. Interns often participate in research, prototyping, user testing, and collaborative design sessions. The goal is to gain hands-on experience in applying human-centered principles to real-world projects, while developing problem-solving and communication skills relevant to the field.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a human centered design internship?

As a Human Centered Design intern, you will likely participate in projects that focus on understanding user needs and creating solutions that improve user experiences. This could involve conducting user research, facilitating design workshops, creating wireframes or prototypes, and collaborating with cross-functional teams such as product managers, engineers, and marketing specialists. You'll gain hands-on experience in applying design thinking methodologies to real business challenges, and your contributions will often help shape the direction of products or services. Interns are encouraged to bring fresh perspectives and are typically given opportunities to present their insights to key stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in human centered design?

To thrive as an Internship Human Centered Design, you need a foundational understanding of user-centered design principles, research methods, and basic proficiency in design tools, often supported by coursework or a relevant degree in design, psychology, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, usability testing platforms, and prototyping software is typically expected. Strong collaboration, empathy, and communication skills help interns connect with users and work effectively in multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are essential for creating solutions that genuinely address user needs and contribute to innovative, impactful design outcomes.

We are seeking a Marketing Intern for the 2026-27 academic year at the Barnes & Noble College retail store in The Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore. This position provides an outstanding opportunity to gain hands-on marketing experience in a dynamic retail setting. The intern will develop key skills in marketing analytics, content creation, branding, and human-centered design. • On-Campus Student Experience: Assist in the development and execution of marketing campaigns and on-campus student engagement initiatives, including digital marketing, social media, email marketing, and event promotion. Coordinate and support two student-driven engagement events each year to foster campus connections and elevate the student experience.
  • Experiential Marketing Support: Support the promotion of in-house events (e.g., book signings, author visits, and student discount programs) through web, email, digital advertising, and regional marketing strategies.
  • Proposal Development: With direction from the Marketing Manager, draft and develop a comprehensive proposal outlining an optimized marketing strategy and its potential impact on the bookstore's brand and consumer engagement.
  • Research & Analysis: Support the Marketing Manager by researching marketing trends, industry best practices, and customer engagement strategies to help inform marketing initiatives.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the marketing team to ensure the project aligns with the bookstore's overall marketing objectives.
  • Additional responsibilities as required.

Responsibilities
  • Current undergraduate student at the University of Notre Dame, pursuing a degree in marketing, business, communications, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create engaging content for different platforms.
  • Proficient in social media management and knowledgeable about current digital marketing trends.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized, capable of managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with design software (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva) is a plus.
  • Prior marketing or retail experience is desirable, but not required.

Qualifications
The hiring rate for this position is $15 per hour.
This is a part-time position requiring 15-20 hours per week with an on-site work structure. The role offers the option to work remotely one day per week to accommodate academic schedules and scholarship commitments.
