Position Title:
Unpaid Intern- Mental Health Counseling
Job Summary:
The internship program at Counseling and Peer Support (CAPS) at College of Lake County is a 10 month service delivery program for Masters-level mental health counseling interns in Illinois. This is an unpaid position. The intern will join the clinical staff at CAPS and conduct clinical services provided to CLC students, while accruing hours for meeting the academic demands of their program of origin. The intern will conduct all activities at CAPS under the supervision of a licensed mental health provider. The Director maintains adequate communication with the intern's program of origin for adequately supporting training needs.
Job Description:
The intern is expected to work in person at the clinic on the College of Lake County's Grayslake Campus for a minimum of 16 hours a week and a maximum of 24 hours per week, with an option to conduct up to 4 hours remotely. The delivery of services on campus can include intakes, individual and group therapy, and telehealth sessions. Clinical work may be temporarily recorded for the purposes of supervision using technology and equipment provided by CAPS. The intern can anticipate completing on average a minimum of 8 clinical hours a week, depending on level of readiness, and as agreed upon with the Director.
Supervision is approached from a developmental-mentoring perspective, where focus goes to progressively supporting the intern in developing their clinical, therapeutic skills. Should the intern have the skills to deliver services in fluent Spanish, supervision can match the language of the service. In addition to 1 hour of individual supervision, the intern will participate in the weekly Case Consultation with the entire clinical staff (group supervision). Clinician's use this hour to consult on their cases, as needed, to address clinical and ethical issues. The input from the intern is valued in this meeting. The intern can anticipate completing 3-5 case presentations over the course of the 10 month experience during the Case Consultation rotation of clinicians. Overall, the extern should expect to receive supervision that will enhance their use of evidence-based treatments that respond to clients' needs.
In addition to direct service hours and supervision, the intern will complete documentation, assist with mental health outreach activities, and support clinic operations as needed.

  • Good standing with program of origin (i.e., recommended for practicum/internship)
