Wellington Management

Job description

About Us

Wellington Management offers comprehensive investment management capabilities that span nearly all segments of the global capital markets. Our investment solutions, tailored to the unique return and risk objectives of institutional clients in more than 60 countries, draw on a robust body of proprietary research and a collaborative culture that encourages independent thought and healthy debate. As a private partnership, we believe our ownership structure fosters a long-term view that aligns our perspectives with those of our clients.

About the Role

THE POSITION
We are looking for a Data Science Analyst (Science Analyst) to join the Healthcare team within Global Investment Research. With over $100B invested in healthcare, across over 50 Portfolio Managers, this represents a flagship franchise for Wellington. The Healthcare team invests globally across the full healthcare continuum, including Biopharma, Healthcare Services and Medical Technology. The Healthcare team includes over 10 colleagues.

The Science Analyst will work as an integral team member alongside Global Industry Analysts and Portfolio Managers, helping identify where data science, AI and alternative data can create differentiated investment insight across the healthcare sector (MedTech, Pharmaceuticals, Biotech, Healthcare Services). The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience in an investment setting, strong Python, SQL and AI skills, sound judgment for turning messy inputs into outputs the team can act on, and a genuine interest in the healthcare sector and the companies operating within it. They should be comfortable working independently, setting their own priorities, and moving fluidly between deep dataset work and quick-turnaround requests.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities for this position will include the following:

Work as an integral part of the Healthcare team, partnering directly with Global Industry Analysts and Portfolio Managers.
Translate broad investment questions into testable data science workflows and analytical outputs.
Apply AI and agentic tools to streamline research workflows and contribute directly to investment idea generation.
Communicate results clearly, including limitations, confidence levels, and interpretation risk.
Serve as an experienced data science resource across the Healthcare team's coverage areas.
Rapidly get up to speed on new companies, sub-sectors, datasets, and business models as the need arises.
Assess and sequence incoming requests based on expected investment impact, feasibility, and how repeatable the resulting work would be.
Develop differentiated signals and analytical frameworks from alternative and structured datasets relevant to healthcare investing.
Evaluate dataset quality, coverage, bias, and signal durability.
Build repeatable tools, screens, and research outputs that can be used across companies and themes within the sector.
Partner with Data Engineering to productionize high-value signals where appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS
Ideal candidates will have:

3-5+ years of experience in data science, alternative data, investment research, healthcare analytics, or a related analytical role.
Prior experience working with investment teams, research teams, or senior business stakeholders.
Strong Python and SQL skills.
Comfort with AI/LLM tooling and agentic workflows, and the ability to apply them to streamline the research process and support idea generation.
Experience working with large, messy, real-world datasets.
Hands-on experience with a variety of alternative datasets, including a track record of sourcing and evaluating new or emerging data, not just working with what's already established.
Strong ability to evaluate dataset quality, bias, representativeness, and signal robustness.
Genuine investment acumen and curiosity about markets, companies, and how data translates into an investment thesis - not just a technical interest in the data itself.
Ability to translate ambiguous investment or business questions into concrete analyses.
Strong communication skills and ability to present nuanced findings to senior stakeholders.
High judgment and comfort operating independently in ambiguous environments.

LOCATION
The Data Science Analyst will ideally be based in Wellington's Global Headquarters in Boston, MA. Location in the New York, NY office will also selectively be considered.

Not sure you meet 100% of our qualifications? That's ok. If you believe that you could excel in this role, we encourage you to apply and welcome a chance to review your background.
