Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Join a growing team of consulting engineers, geologists, and project managers as a Geologist or Engineer I/II supporting Underground Injection Control (UIC), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specializing in the design, permitting, drilling, and maintenance of subsurface salt caverns, injection wells, and subsurface gas storage wells. Principal duties include use of GIS/Geologic software (ArcGIS/Petra) to develop maps and figures for permit applications and reports; field geology/engineering; and client report preparation for Strata’s mineral mining, midstream oil and gas, petrochemical, and industrial clients. Participate in energy projects including hydrocarbon/natural gas storage; hydrogen storage; and carbon sequestration; from early feasibility design, permitting, detailed design, and construction.


This full-time position will work with clients on a daily basis, represent Strata in professional organizations, and perform business development related activities. The Geologist will be responsible for providing technical support and leadership for projects.


Applicants must be able to work within a team environment and individually and uphold professional ethics. Regular travel and working at client locations will be required.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Field Geology
    • Perform pressure fall-off tests and mechanical integrity tests (MITs) for injection wells. Design and plan the test, coordinate services, and oversee the test at the well site. Prepare analysis and report following test completion. Prepare and maintain test equipment.

    • Supervise open and cased hole well logging, site surveying, well clean-outs, and other well-site activities.
    • Pick tops and identify geologic zones from wireline logs.
    • Log wells during drilling.
  • GIS/Geologic Mapping
    • Prepare geologic cross sections, stratigraphic maps, potentiometric groundwater flow maps, and pollutant plume maps.
    • Conduct area of review (AOR) for UIC permit applications.
  • Report Preparation
    • Draft technical reports for submission to clients and/or regulatory agencies.
    • Review and revise technical reports.
    • Compile technical report documents and format for finalization.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience
    • 2 to 4 years of experience in oil and gas exploration, midstream oil and gas, site environmental contamination investigation and remediation, or mining industries.
    • Interest in engineering analysis, engineering design, project management, and project controls (schedule and cost management).
    • Experience with GIS/Geologic software and map or figure development. (ArcGIS and/or Petra preferred)
    • Experience with well workovers, drilling, testing, and related relevant duties. (preferred)
    • Experience with groundwater monitoring, groundwater production, oil and gas production, wastewater disposal, and/or salt cavern wells. (preferred)
    • Internship or work experience in geology consulting or oil and gas services. (preferred)
  • Education and Certifications
    • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Petroleum Geology, Geologic Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering, or similar degree from accredited university.
    • Master’s degree in Geology, Petroleum Geology, Geologic Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering, or similar degree from accredited university. (preferred)
    • Commitment to obtain Professional Geologist/Professional Engineer registration once qualifications are met.
  • Computer Skills
    • Proficiency with GIS software. (ArcGIS preferred)
    • A high degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, is a must.
    • AutoCAD, Python, Microsoft Excel w/ VBA. (preferred)
  • Interpersonal - Must be able to effectively communicate complex geologic, engineering and science concepts to clients, co-workers, and regulators in a manner that can be understood by all.
