Description:

Are you a detail-oriented fiber professional who enjoys solving complex network challenges and building the foundation for future growth? Do you thrive in an environment where your work directly impacts the expansion of critical infrastructure and helps connect communities to high-speed internet?

At IdeaTek, our fiber network is growing rapidly. As we continue expanding through acquisitions, state-funded projects, and new market builds, we're looking for a Fiber Design Engineer to help support and maintain the integrity of our growing fiber plant.

In this role, you'll be involved in all aspects of fiber network engineeringโ€”from documentation and GIS updates to network design, quality assurance, and construction support. You'll work closely with internal teams and contractors to ensure our fiber network remains accurate, scalable, and ready to support future growth.

This position offers work location flexibility between home and our offices located in Buhler, KS and Fowler, KS.

A Day in the Life

You'll start your day reviewing incoming network documentation, contractor deliverables, and support requests. You may be updating GIS records, reviewing high-level designs, creating splice documentation, or supporting special construction projects.

Throughout the day, you'll collaborate with engineering, construction, operations, and contractor partners to ensure network records remain accurate and project timelines stay on track. Whether you're generating construction documents, supporting a state-funded build, or troubleshooting a documentation issue, your work helps ensure IdeaTek's fiber network is prepared for continued growth.

What You'll Do

Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintain accurate documentation of IdeaTek's fiber network utilizing GIS platforms, including Vetro and related systems
  • Review, organize, and update fiber network records, trunk maps, as-builts, AOE documentation, and splicing information
  • Develop fiber network layouts to support residential and business customers
  • Create splice documentation and supporting network design records
  • Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and construction documentation for network builds
  • Assist with project cost estimates and design support activities
  • Support and review high-level network designs to ensure quality and accuracy
  • Scrub contractor-submitted high-level designs and provide timely feedback to estimating teams
  • Monitor and complete fiber engineering support tickets and documentation requests
  • Update GIS databases using information from as-built construction maps and field activities
  • Collaborate with internal teams and contractors to support ongoing network expansion projects
  • Support special projects including corporate, state-funded, and federally funded fiber builds
  • Assist with the review, testing, and ongoing development of automated design software

What Will Help You Stand Out

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Adtran or Calix GPON systems
  • Experience with DWDM network technologies
  • Experience utilizing GIS-based systems such as Vetro
  • Experience supporting large-scale FTTH deployments
  • Experience working on state-funded or federally funded broadband projects
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, GIS, Telecommunications, Information Technology, or a related field

Desired Attributes

Beyond the qualifications, these attributes are what make someone a great fit for our team:

  • Problem Solver โ€“ You enjoy tackling challenges and finding practical solutions.
