Interns typically assist with mapping, data collection, spatial analysis, and maintaining utility asset records such as water, electric, or gas lines. These internships provide hands-on experience with GIS software and fieldwork, helping interns learn how utilities use geographic data for planning and operations. The experience gained can be valuable for a future career in GIS, engineering, or utility management.

What projects or tasks can an internship GIS utility expect to work on?

As a GIS Utility intern, you can expect to work on projects such as updating and maintaining geospatial databases, creating maps to support utility operations, and assisting with data collection in the field. You may also help analyze spatial data to identify trends or issues related to utility infrastructure. Interns often collaborate closely with engineers, field crews, and GIS analysts, gaining exposure to both office and fieldwork. This hands-on experience helps interns develop practical GIS skills and a deeper understanding of utility operations.
