Job description

Position Summary

The Pueblo of Nambe is seeking a dedicated and experienced Tribal Forester & Arborist to develop, implement, and oversee the forest management plan for the Pueblo's lands. This position will be instrumental in ensuring the health, sustainability, and preservation of the natural resources surrounding the Pueblo, including forested areas, orchards, and wildlife habitats. The successful candidate will manage forest management strategies such as wildfire prevention, invasive species removal, and preservation of the Pueblo's native plant and tree species. The position also involves overseeing the care and maintenance of fruit orchards and trees, as well as managing teams of youth interns to carry out restoration and conservation projects throughout the Pueblo.

This role requires a blend of technical expertise in forestry and arboriculture, combined with strong leadership and project management skills to engage and mentor youth interns in environmental restoration efforts. The ideal candidate will be passionate about preserving and restoring the natural environment, as well as empowering future generations to contribute to these important efforts.

Key Responsibilities

1. Forest Management & Wildfire Prevention

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive forest management plan that includes wildfire prevention, fuel reduction, and habitat restoration.
  • Monitor and assess the health of forested lands and identify areas requiring restoration or rehabilitation.
  • Develop strategies for reducing the risk of wildfires and increase community preparedness.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies on wildfire prevention efforts.
2. Invasive Species Removal & Habitat Restoration
  • Identify and manage invasive plant species and pests that threaten native vegetation and forest health.
  • Coordinate invasive species removal efforts, using both manual and chemical control methods as necessary.
  • Develop and implement strategies for habitat restoration and reforestation, focusing on preserving native species.
3. Orchard & Fruit Tree Management
  • Oversee the maintenance and health of fruit orchards, including pruning, irrigation, pest control, and fertilization.
  • Plan and supervise fruit tree harvesting and ensure sustainable practices for long-term orchard health.
  • Work with community members to preserve cultural practices related to the orchard and fruit tree use.
4. Youth Internship & Community Engagement
  • Lead and mentor teams of youth interns, providing hands-on training in forest management, arboriculture, and environmental restoration techniques.
  • Manage intern projects to restore natural areas, including planting, invasive species removal, and trail maintenance.
  • Foster positive relationships with the youth, providing guidance, education, and career-building opportunities.
  • Facilitate educational outreach to the community on sustainable land management practices and conservation efforts.
5. Collaboration & Reporting
  • Work closely with the Pueblo's leadership, local organizations, and external partners to align forest and environmental goals with community needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of forest health assessments, project progress, and restoration efforts.
  • Prepare regular reports and updates for the Director and other stakeholders regarding the status of ongoing projects.
6. Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure all forest management and restoration activities adhere to safety standards and regulations.
  • Promote a safe working environment for all team members, especially youth interns, by conducting safety training and ensuring safe practices are followed.
  • Stay current with local, state, and federal environmental regulations and best practices in forestry, arboriculture, and land management.


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Arboriculture, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management or significant experience in forestry, arboriculture, or a related field may substitute for formal education.
  • At least 3 years of experience in forest management, arboriculture, or natural resource management, with experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Experience working with Native American communities and an understanding of cultural and environmental concerns is preferred.
  • Experience managing youth programs or internships is highly desirable.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of forest management principles, wildfire prevention techniques, and sustainable land management practices.
  • Expertise in arboriculture, including tree identification, care, and maintenance.
  • Proficiency in invasive species identification and control methods.
  • Experience with orchard management and fruit tree care, including harvest and preservation methods.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor youth in hands-on restoration projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with Pueblo leadership, community members, and external partners.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including hiking, lifting, and performing physical tasks as needed.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as chainsaws, mowers, and other forestry tools safely.

Additional Requirements
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to travel within the region for project sites and meetings. Must be insurable with the Pueblo of Nambe
  • Background check and drug testing will be required.
