Internship Export Control information

What is an internship in export control?

An Internship in Export Control is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain practical experience in managing and complying with regulations that govern the export of goods, technology, and information. Interns typically assist with documentation, research export laws, support compliance processes, and help ensure that a company adheres to national and international export control laws. This role is ideal for those interested in international trade, law, or compliance, and provides valuable insights into global business operations and regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an export control intern?

To thrive in an Internship Export Control role, you need a solid understanding of international trade regulations, compliance principles, and attention to detail, often supported by coursework in law, business, or international relations. Familiarity with export control management software, databases, and regulatory frameworks such as EAR and ITAR is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and organizational skills help interns interpret complex regulations and collaborate across departments. Mastering these skills is crucial for ensuring legal compliance, reducing risk, and supporting global business operations.

What types of projects can an intern expect to work on in an export control internship?

As an Export Control intern, you will typically assist with compliance checks, documentation review, and data analysis to ensure that company exports adhere to international regulations. You may help update export classification databases, participate in internal audits, and collaborate with legal, logistics, and engineering teams to resolve compliance questions. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into regulatory processes and cross-functional teamwork, offering a solid foundation for future roles in trade compliance or international business.
