Join Our Team at Mon Valley Works
Imagine starting your shift in a world-class steelmaking environment where safety comes first, inclusion is celebrated, and your work powers everyday life. At U. S. Steel, we’re building the future of steel and the careers of the people who make it. When you apply to this requisition, you are applying to opportunities across all three Mon Valley plants: Clairton Works, Irvin Works, and Edgar Thomson Works.
We foster an inclusive workplace and celebrate the diversity of our employees. This role begins as an entry-level Utility Person — a cornerstone position that keeps production moving and equipment maintained in a heavy industrial setting.
A Day in the Life
You’ll support production and service units across the mill, moving between areas and tasks as needed. One shift might mean using torches and power-actuated tools to prepare materials; another could find you assisting with equipment inspections or operating mobile equipment. The work is physical and hands-on, with changing conditions that can be hot, cold, wet, greasy, dirty, and noisy — and at times near molten metal.
What You’ll Do
- Use hand tools, pneumatic tools, gauges, oxygen lances, power-actuated tools, and torches to support production units.
- Handle, move, and process product and materials throughout the mill.
- Assist with inspecting and maintaining plant equipment to keep operations reliable.
- Operate select mobile equipment in a heavy industrial environment.
- Work in varied mill areas with exposure to hot, cold, wet, greasy, dirty, and noisy conditions; occasional work near molten metal.
- Perform manual labor, including lifting more than 25 lbs and working around hot, heavy, sharp materials and hazardous chemicals.
Shift & Scheduling
- Rotating 8-hour shifts that include Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
- Overtime as needed to support production demands.
Safety Gear You’ll Wear
- Hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, and boots with metatarsal protection; respirator when required.
- Strict adherence to safety procedures and guidelines at all times.
Grow Into Utility Technician
After brief on-the-job training, you’ll progress to a Utility Technician role operating material handling equipment such as overhead and mobile cranes of various sizes and types, tractors, trucks, dozers, loaders, boom trucks, and feeders.
What You Bring
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Punctuality, consistent attendance, and self-direction.
- Comfort working around hazardous chemicals and hot/heavy/sharp materials.
- Ability to lift more than 25 lbs.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment digital assessment.
