As of Aug 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for internship cytology in the United States is $17.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern in cytology?

To thrive as an Intern in Cytology, you generally need a background in biological sciences, attention to detail, and completion or pursuit of relevant coursework or a degree in medical laboratory science or cytotechnology. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), microscopy, and specimen preparation protocols is typically required. Strong analytical skills, communication, and teamwork are important soft skills for interpreting results and collaborating with laboratory staff. These skills are essential for accurate diagnostic support, maintaining laboratory standards, and effective patient care.

What is an internship in cytology?

An internship in cytology is a supervised practical training program where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in the laboratory analysis of cells. During the internship, participants learn to prepare, stain, and examine cell samples under a microscope to help diagnose diseases, such as cancer. Interns work closely with certified cytotechnologists and pathologists, developing essential skills in cytologic techniques, quality control, and laboratory safety. This experience is crucial for those pursuing a career in cytology or laboratory medicine.

What is the difference between Internship Cytology vs Cytotechnologist?

AspectInternship CytologyCytotechnologist
Required CredentialsTypically enrolled in or recently completed cytology training or educationPost-secondary degree in cytology or related field, certification often required
Work EnvironmentTraining setting, supervised, educational focusClinical laboratory, independent work with microscopes and lab equipment
Employer & Industry UsageHospitals, clinics, educational institutions for training purposesHospitals, diagnostic labs, healthcare facilities for diagnostic work

Internship Cytology is a training position for students or recent graduates gaining practical experience, while Cytotechnologists are certified professionals performing diagnostic cytology analysis. The internship prepares individuals for a career in cytology, whereas cytotechnologists work independently in clinical settings to detect diseases like cancer.

What types of hands-on experience can I expect during a cytology internship?

During a cytology internship, you can expect to gain practical experience preparing and staining cytological specimens, screening slides under supervision, and assisting in the identification of abnormal cells. Interns typically rotate through different lab areas, work closely with certified cytotechnologists, and may observe or assist in fine needle aspiration procedures. This exposure helps you develop technical skills, learn proper laboratory protocols, and understand how cytology contributes to patient diagnosis and care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support R&D projects advancing display technologies at BigHat that expands BigHat's antibody discovery capabilities and feed its ML models.
  • Lead in the construction and QC of phage and yeast display libraries across diverse antibody formats (VHH, scFv, Fab) using standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, molecular cloning, electroporation).
  • Execute phage and yeast display selections using naive and affinity and stability maturation libraries to discover and engineer antibodies with desired therapeutic properties.
  • Express, purify, and characterize display-derived molecules using assays including ELISA, flow cytometry, BLI/SPR, CE-SDS, and others.
  • Analyze selection results and contribute to discussions on next steps and future experimental design.
  • Collaborate with BigHat’s Data Science and Machine Learning teams to inform library design and interpret selection data for model training.
  • Present experimental plans and results during regular meetings with manager and science teams.
  • Maintain thorough records using LIMS and electronic notebooks.

Skills Knowledge and Expertise
  • BS or MS in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of hands-on laboratory experience (academic or industry); relevant internship or research experience welcome.
  • Familiarity with general molecular biology techniques (PCR, molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis).
  • Exposure to antibody biology, display technologies (phage or yeast), and protein expression.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow protocols carefully, troubleshoot experiments, and maintain detailed lab records.
  • Effective time management and clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented mindset with an eagerness to learn in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Nice-to-haves include experience with flow cytometry, ELISA, or other binding assays, and familiarity with NGS or automation platforms.
