Job description

Join a collaborative histology team at one of Louisiana's leading pathology organizations. As a Cytology/Grossing Technician, you'll play an essential role in the patient care journey - preparing and staining cytology samples, performing gross dissection, and ensuring every specimen is handled with precision so our pathologists can deliver timely, accurate diagnoses. JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for assessing and verifying specimens, grossing, preparing and staining cytology samples for pathologist read; maintaining all cytology quality control records.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Gross Dissection:

  • Gross dissect small, uncomplicated specimens giving accurate measurements and descriptions using pre-defined template protocols under supervision of PA (grossing)
  • Perform decalcification on tissue and monitor these on necessary specimens
  • Stores, rotates, and disposes of all wet tissues in accordance with departmental procedures

2. Cytology:

  • Assist with verifying, grossing, processing, labeling and staining cytology specimens
  • Log specimens and work on cytology log
  • Assign proper case type and protocol - slide and cassette inventory in the computer
  • Store and/or discard cytology specimens at end of day
  • Stain and label all cytology slides received or produced according to current guidelines

3. End of Day Procedures - Cytology and Grossing Area:

  • Stain and properly label all cytology slides
  • Place all cellblocks in formalin to be loaded onto the processor with the small tissues
  • Store residual specimens and clean cytology area and/or grossing bay at end of day
  • Loads prepared cassettes into a tissue processor and starts the processor
  • Maintains cleanliness of the grossing benches

4. Miscellaneous:

  • Assist in other areas of histology as training and competency is achieved (embedding, staining, tagging slides, filing blocks, logging in received supplies)
  • Other duties as assigned by the histology manager(s) and/or P.A.s

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate in Science Degree
  • Some medical lab experience
  • Must meet CLIA requirements (transcript approval required by Compliance)
  • Bachelor of Science Degree with CLIA regulations satisfied preferred.
