Job description

Job Description:

The Research Assistant will assist with experiments to examine the cellular processes by which specific genetic variants modify neurodegeneration phenotypes associated with ALS. The Research Assistant will use genetic, cell biological and molecular techniques to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying genetic suppression of locomotor and neuronal defects apparent in the disease state. This research will make use of Drosophila as a model system. In addition to assisting with specific experiments that involve genetic crosses, tissue dissections, immunohistochemistry, imaging, molecular techniques and biochemical assays, the research assistant will also help perform-omic analyses. The Research Assistant will also engage in and assist with general lab support duties.


This is a fixed term position with a current end date of one year from the date of hire which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Required: Bachelor degree in biology, genetics, neuroscience, biochemistry, or related field with prior related experience or extensive coursework
  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Relevant coursework and knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of Genetics, Molecular, Cell Biology and Biochemistry is preferred
  • Strong computer skills with experience using graphing, image and statistical analysis programs is desirable
  • Experience using Drosophila as a research organism is advantageous
