Position Summary:

The Clinical Lab Scientist II/III (Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist) performs a wide range of routine and complex laboratory testing to support accurate diagnosis and patient care. This role is responsible for analyzing and reporting test results, maintaining quality and regulatory standards, troubleshooting equipment and testing processes, and supporting laboratory operations across pre-analytical and analytical areas. The Clinical Lab Scientist also assists with training staff and students, monitors quality control, and collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure exceptional laboratory service. Advanced-level staff may provide leadership support, competency assessments, validation of new testing, quality improvement initiatives, and serve as charge personnel when needed.

Location: Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, MD

Responsibilities 
  • Perform routine and complex clinical laboratory testing, accurately analyzing and reporting results.
 
  • Process and verify specimens, ensuring proper identification, handling, and documentation.
 
  • Maintain quality assurance standards and participate in troubleshooting, validations, and process improvements.
 
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment while monitoring inventory and supplies.
 
  • Train and support laboratory staff, students, and new team members as assigned.
 
  • Collaborate with pathologists, providers, and laboratory colleagues to support exceptional patient care.
 
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety, regulatory, and Johns Hopkins Medicine standards and policies.
 
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and perform additional laboratory duties as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific field required. Related degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or similar disciplines may be considered if accompanied by qualifying clinical laboratory coursework, internships, or clinical rotations that meet regulatory testing requirements.
  • Must have EPIC experience 
  • ASCP certification (MLS, MT, MLT) or equivalent certification from an approved agency preferred; may be required depending on experience level.
  • Clinical laboratory experience ranging from internship/clinical rotations for entry-level candidates to 2+ years of direct clinical laboratory experience for advanced candidates.
