Job description

Description
The Clinical Lab Scientist I performs moderate and high complexity testing per CLIA regulations.

Core Competencies
  • Performs laboratory tests according to written laboratory procedure, evaluates test results for accuracy and clinical significance. Reports test results.
  • Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
  • Ensures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and test systems are properly functioning.
  • Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Performs clerical and computer-related documentation accurately.
  • Prioritizes and coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency.
  • Uses the appropriate hand off communication techniques (SBAR) when appropriate.
  • Assists in training of new employees.
  • Demonstrates an active problem solving attitude & positive approach to all aspects of job
  • Maintains safe work area by observing all safety procedures and reporting any unsafe conditions or practices to the appropriate personnel.
  • Participates in hospital performance improvement activities (kaizens, lean initiatives) when appropriate.
  • Answers telephone inquiries of a technical nature from physicians or hospital personnel in other area of the hospital while maintaining good phone etiquette

Department Specific Competencies
  • Demonstrates proficiency in reading and interpreting stained smears.
  • Dispense blood and blood products to Nursing Personnel according to Blood Bank policies and procedures.
  • Issues tissue products and derivatives to personnel according to Blood Bank policies and procedures.

Additional InformationMeets CLIA General Supervisor, High Complexity Testing requirements (42 CFR 493 1487). California Clinical Laboratory Scientist Trainee License acceptable upon completion of California approved training program at time of hire. State License must be acquired within six months.License / Certification Requirements
