Qualifications:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Degree/Education: Successfully completed a Doctor of Medicine or a doctor of osteopathy degree from an approved medicine or osteopathy. Foreign Medical Graduates must possess an Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate
- Internship/Residency/Fellowship: Successfully completed a Dermatology residency or fellowship program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
- Experience: Must have a minimum of 24 months in the last 60 months of documented current clinical independent experience and competency. Must have the level of experience and documented current clinical competency to be awarded “Regular” privileges to work independently. Experience working in a government setting such a DOD or Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) MTF is preferable. Recent completion of an accredited dermatology residency or fellowship program may be used to satisfy part or all of this requirement.
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, and PALS
- Board Certification: Maintains a current American Board of Dermatology specialty board certification or American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology specialty board certification. Those diplomates who are enrolled in the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) will successfully complete requirements to maintain certification.
- Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice dermatology.
- The scope of privileges in Dermatology includes the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with diseases of the skin and adjacent mucous membranes, cutaneous appendages, hair, nails, and subcutaneous tissue with provision of consultation. Dermatologists may admit and may provide care to patients in the intensive care setting or the operating room in accordance with MTF policies.
- Privileges also include the ability to assess, stabilize, and determine the disposition of patients with emergent conditions in accordance with medical staff policy.
- Works under general supervision of the Chief, Dermatology, who will discuss policies & objectives, and will assign specific duties, to include patient care and non-patient care activities. There is no direct supervision, and the individual exercises independent judgment in selection and performance of the full range of diagnostic evaluations for patients.
- Works independently (and with considerable latitude for professional technical decisions, overall effectiveness, and accomplishment of objectives) in accordance with methods and practices of the medical profession and established administrative policies and guidelines for the treatment of medical conditions as an expert in the field of dermatology.
- If hospital admission for dermatologic disease/disorder is deemed necessary, the admission will be accomplished as per the local Military Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) instructions. The incumbent will act solely as dermatology consultant without direct admission privileges to the hospital. Although the dermatologist should assist as needed, the writing of admission orders is the responsibility of the appropriate inpatient department.

- The duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases of the skin, hair, mucosal surfaces, and
- Performs biopsies and other diagnostic techniques of dermatology, and determines requirements for clinical laboratory
- Prescribes treatment, including medication, cutaneous laser treatments, phototherapy, iontophoresis, and photodynamic therapy.
- Advises on types and quantity of dermatological supplies and
- Appropriately eradicates biopsy proven cutaneous malignancies, or ensures that patients are referred to other providers to perform this task.
- Maintains a professional manner and displays a cooperative and positive
- Patient Sensitivity: The health care providers shall provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and personal dignity.
- Effectively utilizes excellent verbal communication skills for interactions with patients, family members, and members of the healthcare team, whether face to face, by telephone, or by other methods of verbal communication.
- Effectively utilizes excellent written communication skills to perform accurate and complete documentation, both handwritten and electronic, of all activity in accordance with MTF policies and standards of care.
- Effectively communicates and collaborates with a diverse group of people, including patients, family members, primary care managers, and other physicians and nurses, for the purpose of gathering information, formulating plans of care, informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, coordinating care for issues outside of the scope of practice for this specialty, and teaching/educating the patient, family, and the healthcare organization.
- Maintains knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of the electronic health record and other information systems, to include basic office software and web-based applications.
- Uses electronic information systems and paper records to review health records, interpret findings, and develop an accurate and complete understanding of patients’ state of health, to include differential diagnoses/health care problem
- Uses electronic medical record systems to prepare case histories, clinical records, and other reports as may be required in support of services rendered, and in accordance with regulations, standards of practice, and established procedures of the MTF.
- Identifies appropriate healthcare resources and utilizes them efficiently (in relation to quality of care and cost effectiveness) in meeting the health and educational needs of patients and families, including but not limited to: performing or ordering exams, diagnostic tests/studies, procedures, medications, and consultation with physicians or allied health professionals.
- Referrals and consults: The provider shall follow DoD and DHA policies when arranging for a referral or consult. The provider shall inform patients of the required referral or consult by indicating the All consults and referrals will adhere to the approved Market Consult Management process.
- Prescriptions: The provider shall use and follow the approved formulary for prescriptions for all patients that received care in the Any drug not listed on the formulary must be approved by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
- Procedure Guidance: Contractor providers shall perform procedures compatible with the medical facility's operating capacity and equipment. New medical procedures/services shall not be introduced without prior recommendation to, and approval of, the MTF Commander or authorized representative.
- Provides consultative services for patient care within the scope of practice for this specialty, as requested by medical or surgical clinics, and evaluates and treats or advises treatment for patients who were screened and referred by the Emergency
- Recognizes adverse signs and symptoms and react quickly in emergency situations, to conduct immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems, should they occur.
- Ensures compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
- Ensures a safe work environment, employee safe work habits and patient safety, IAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement
- Adheres to the Center for Disease Control guidelines concerning standard precautions and the MTF Infection Control Program.
- Takes part in Quality Assurance Programs, as required to meet the standards of The Joint Commission, Defense Health Agency Procedural Instruction, Air Force Instruction, Army Regulation, and any other military/civilian accreditation agency which surveys the MTF.

- Consult with commanders regarding at-risk patients on complex cases in terms of diagnosis, fitness for duty and treatment information in accordance with DoD, Air Force, and Army instructions.
- Within the scope of practice, develops and implements health promotion, illness/injury prevention and therapeutic plans congruent with the client's diagnosis, health care problem or Provides developmentally appropriate anticipatory guidance education, and counseling to patients and their families.
